Pardon the pun but, are there many crappie fishermen here?

I am considering trying down by Petrie Island, but I have never gone crappie fishing before. I usually fish for perch, bass and catch a pike now and again. Is the method the same as for perch but using smaller tackle?

Based on what I know, it's a tough go at petrie.

They are there in the winter, then go to creeks/tribs to spawn, and then find some deep holes and suspend for the summer... Lots of people hit the rideau, but don't know where I've never been myself.

When I fish for crappie I usually use a slip bobber with a #6 true turn hook and a split shot with a small minnow , if I'm fishing in ten feet of water I set the hook at five feet. You have to let the crappie take the bobber right down and set the hook gently because crappies have real soft lips.

Small mud minnows work great, I also use micro tubes as well. Dont know much about petrie but down my way the bite can change with every body of water you fish. Some lakes I can only get them at night, other they slow down at dark. Try to fish over top of them. Right now look for warm inflows and shallow back bays.

I know it can be a drive from orleans, especially since most people don't consider crappies much of a real sport fish, but I've seen some monster crappies come out of farily deep water in the Rideau river somewhere between Kemptville and Manotick. My dad and I used to fish them offshore, but in the last few years we've been doing better later in the spring, and into the early summer. We've even been known to fish them in thirty-forty feet of water, along a bridge abuttment in one of the deeper parts of that section of water.

Oddly enough, it also happens to be where many anglers come up for what's been considered some world class Muskie fishing.
