When i just got out fishing i carry 5 rods. Which is all my rods except my carp gear.

7'2" Medium Musky Rod ~Musky spinnerbaits, Bucktails, Medium Jerkbaits, Cranks
7' Extra Heavy flipping stick ~ Big Spinnerbaits, Big Jerkbaits, Bucktails, Texes rigged worms
6'8" Medium bass crankbait rod ~ Cranks, spinnerbaits, small Jerkabaits
6'6" Medium Light Spinning rod ~Senkos, tubes, light cranks

I plan to get one more Heavy Musky rod for jerkbaits and trolling and a M-MH spinning rod for bigger senkos...

Space is a big issue in our boat, with 2 adults, 2 kids, and (as of this past season  ) 2 dogs. Safety is a bigger issue, so we just can't have too many pre-rigged rods lying around. The hooks are a real hazard to the boys & pets.

We do usually 2 or 3 ready for the kids, and another couple each -- usually with a topwater lure, softbait, jig and crank assortment.

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.

You need more than one? I usually will carry 2 tops in the boat anything more than that would only confuse me  I showed Ed from Toobinators a new lure, a rapala Legend got for me, at the ice fishing weekend. First thing he says you'll need a 6.5' rod soft tip etc. I'm thinking I gotta buy a new rod to fish this lure  These new lures should come with warnings  But then again I fishforfun :D I'm sure there are a few more anglers like me.

8 rods

1 for spinner baits
1 for buzzbaits
2 for topwater (poppers and topknockers)
2 for cranks (depends on species)
2 spinning outfits for plastics 1 for frogs the other for worms or flapping shads

This year I may take more as I am bound and determined to learn to use jigs

Each rig is set up for the baits involved. It also vairs on the water fished.

For the Rideau I use more plastics than cranks so I will replace the crank rods with other rods better suited to plastics

For the headpond I will use more cranks than frogs
White lake I use more spinner baits and plastics so again I will adjust

Structure plays a role in tackle set up.

Good replies everyone.. it's a real insight into how everyone fishes.

Some obviously are tournament guys, while others just go out with the kids and have fun. It does somewhat come down to space as 7 rods will definetly be my limit otherwise i'll be falling over them.

One rod that i almost forgot to add was a light 5'6 panfish rod i keep in the boat. It's suprising how a 15 minute break swinging a few small fish into the boat can give you a new lease of life on a day when the fishing is tough.

Wolfe makes a good point too, with having kids and pets in the boat safety is perhaps more of a concern than having that tube rod handy.

GamblerSteve i was interested to see most of your rods are 7' is this a personal preference? do you find you have more control or does you main style of fishing revolve around flippin and pitching baits?

Usually carry 8 or 9 myself, 2 spinning and 6 baitcasting...sometimes the downrigger rods are there too.

That is just myself, usually partner has a half dozen or so as well.

14 rods and reels this year, just for me. My partner generally brings 7 to 10, depending on the body of water we are fishing.

Baitcasting
7'3" St Croix Avid for rats

2 7' G loomis for worming

6'10" Crucial for flipping

2 6'9" G Loomis for spinnerbaiting

6'8" G Loomis for worming

6'6" St Croix for Flapping shad or spinnerbaiting

5'10" G Loomis for topwater

Spinning
7'3" Crucial for Senkos

7'1" G Loomis for Senkos

6'3" G Loomis for open water Tubes

6'0" G Loomis for Jig Worms

5'9" St Croix for in close tubes

All have Shimano reels on them.

Bass fishermen are a sick sick bunch

Rods

Post by GamblerSteve »

John,

Most of my rods are 7' or bigger due to line movement after hook set and fighting the fish afterwards. When I first started fishing I had 6', 6'6" rods and as I found over the years fighting fish is much better with a longer rod. If you think about the rods your using a 6' rod your basically using a 5' rod 1' is tip 5' is backbone. I would recommend try using to longest rod possible that our comfortable with. Look at your Carp fishing you can still catch Carp with a 6' rods but it’s better with a longer rod. Better casting and better to fight the fish. If you ever want to meet sometime on the water I would gladly let you try a few rod combinations.

For pike, walleye and whitefish I usually head up river with

- 4 foot light spinning for jigging (6 lb mono)
- 6 1/2 foot med/light spinning for casting and jigging (10 lb braid, 2 diameter)
- 6 foot medium spinning with 10 lb mono for casting
- 6 1/2 foot med/heavy spinning with 14-30lb braid for casting and jigging
- 6 wt 9ft fly rod with sink and float lines

- this year will add a 6 1/2 foot med/heavy baitcaster with 50lb braid for bottom fishing sturgeon.

Thanks FFF,

You just met one, I'm reading this thread and nothing but dollar signs are winging through my brain, that and ending up helplessly entangled with fishing line and rods in the bottom of my boat ...drifting the high seas forever.

I have two ...I take two, one long and one short ...that's as technical as I can get

I keep my rods in the boat at all times, however I may only pull out a couple when I fish. That goes for lures too.

I did at one time go out fishing with a battery of rods all rigged and ready but not now. I don't like the clutter.

Sometimes it has nothing to do with what the fish may want either. I just think ......Hmmm lets do some topwater fishing today. Then I'll pull out a suitable rod, tie on a tried and true bait and fish the heck out of it. Sometimes I'll use this to force myself to learn a new technique too.

Somedays I want to learn and experiment and don't need to catch alot of fish.
