Muskrat Madness

Post by Wall-I-Guy »

Who is this masked man??? Now the hat is likely a dead giveaway!

Image

Well we headed to Muskrat as planned. After meeting at the boat ramp in Cobden for 7:30, we decided to head out onto the ice. We decide to zip down the middle of the lake as there are good tracks all the way, no problem!

We finally pick a spot we figure could be good, well as it turns out, it wasn’t bad, for Pike.

Bucketmouth nails this beauty in relative short order.

Image

Not to be outdone,

Saskie follows about 10 minutes later with this beauty!

Image

Unfortunately, those would be the only two fish that area would hold.

Here’s Bacon enjoying the day,

Image

Tony and Bucket chatting it up,

Image

And Saskie, off on his own enjoying the serenity! He’s beside Oakborne and Zory’s shelter! You weren’t trying to listen were you?

Image

Off we go again on another journey, finally find another spot. We set up shop and it’s not 5 minutes and wham, WIG has a fish on, it has very decent weight, but alas, we’ll never know what it is as my jiggin’ rap gets hung up just under the ice and it’s gone!

Other than a few Perch, that was it for that area, time to move again!

Well we finally find a nice hump in the middle of the Lake, pretty much right on top of where Markus and I were fishing when the big guy landed his 8 pounder at Muskrat. This area just screams, Wally World!!

So we all set up, isn’t long before Tony poaches  inside joke  , ‘er I mean runs and grabs Bacon’s line, on the other end is just a hog of a Perch. This photo does not do the fish justice, it was a pig!! Hopefully Bucket has a better shot!

Image

After a few nice sized Perch thrown onto the ice, nothing for awhile, then,

Ransome nails a beauty Wally, 2 pounds plus!

Image

We figured great, things are going to pick up as it was just starting to get darker out!

Alas, that was it until we left anyway. MM, Saskie and myself headed back about 6 pm or so!

Bucketmouth, Bacon, Ransome, Tony, Oakborne and Zory were still there when we left! Top marks to Zory for her spirit, out there all day without so much as a whimper of a complaint! :D

I also have a short video of Bucket landing his Pike, when I figure out how to link to it, I’ll get it up!

Where do I begin? Been waiting for this trip all week! Was nice to get out with such a great group of fisherman. Nice meeting Saskie and Muskiemagnet. Never seen such a calm and collected ice fisherman as Saskie - must have had 20 fish today take his bait and spit it just as he was going for the hookset! Nary a curse word from him...

I have no pictures of the first spot we set up. One thing I noticed at this spot since I have had no previous experience in this lake were the clouds of smelt in the water column below our holes. If I recall Magnet had a decent strike during this flurry of smelt activity. Unfortunately they moved on but not before Tony downsized his presentation and caught a few smelt for fun.

After Saskie and I bagged ourselves a couple of almost identical pike we moved on to our next section of lake.

Wig lost a nice one as soon as we got there on his jigging rapala. Many of us were getting perch down deep when Tony pipes up that he's got a big one. We race over, his rod doubled over.... hard to see in the picture but one big-@ss tree limb

Image

Here's a distant shot of where we set up shop.

Image

And WIG jigging his heart out...

Image

We moved over to our final destination of the day and as soon as Bacon drops his tipup in, WHAM Flag! Tony helps himself to the hookset and lands this beauty 12"er-

Image

Here's Tony and Ian on their way back from a run and gun session with the Vex and Oak's new auger (thanks alot Jeff for letting us all use it at will, good on ya buddy).

Image

Oak's Frabill and the sun was going down...

Image

Not long after WIG, Magnet, and Saskie left the walleye bite turned on and Ian got his second and I landed 2 as well. Here's my second walleye...

Image

The walleye club... good eats!

Image

The absolute best part of my day was when I noticed my Vex's transducer float bobbing in the hole soon after I released a dink perch down the hole. Thought maybe the perch was stuck on the cable but it turned out as I looked down the hole there was a lake trout's head bumping my transducer! Not sure if these guy's thought I was smoking something but I wasn't seeing things, that was the coolest thing I've ever witnessed icefishing!!

Had a great day, looking forward to Saturday at Silver Lake.

There was the post I was waiting for! Good Report WIG and Bucket! The way I see it, last time we were at Petrie and I assisted Bacon catch his 15" walleye on the tip-up he said if it goes off again that I could have it... well, it did but not til that 12" perch came along :D Bet you forgot about that, eh Bacon :) So I figure it was redemption, plus we're on the same team anyways :D Also reading that post I was reminded of the huge hit that I had at the final spot after the first few perch were caught and I think that it was a big eye  or a good sized pike  I won't even entertain the thought that it could've been a laker because I won't sleep for days :( Thanks again to Oak, and MM for lending us your augers, and drilling us all those holes!! And MM it was too bad we didn't get any lakers but I think you were close a couple times today with your tube...

Great day and I'll be back for some eyes of my own!!!!

Too bad no Lakers...
For the number of Lakers the MNR stocks that lake with there doesn't seem to be a great deal of them being caught.
Wonder where they are???
Nice to see Muskrat producing good walleye. :D :D :D :D :D
That's the fish species most would like to see concentrated on by MNR officials instead of the lake trout.
Promote efforts into developping the walleye stocks and skip the laker stocking.

That's what the Local Conservation Club is going to be pushing for...
Anyone interested in attending, the next meeting is Monday 28 February at 8pm at the Cobden Legion. It is located on the Main St.
New members are welcome.

Great report guys!!!
See ya Saturday Bucket!!!
