Always enjoyed the "Museum of Man" ooooops, I mean the Museum of Civilization (what was the year that museum was forced to change it's name in the pursuit of political correctness??? (give me a break))

It's probably Ottawa's finest museum, and, while you are there at the museum you must take in a movie at the IMAX theater.

Later be sure to enjoy the "Japanese Village" (the bomb baby, wee bit pricey though but worth it) restaurant (somebody give them the street I'm drawing a blank) or one of these other personal favorites of mine "Big Daddy's Crab Shack or Al's Steakhouse on Elgin.

Later, leave the wife back at the hotel and head out to enjoy a drink at either one of these finer gentlemanly establishments, Fanny's, Barefax or Barbarella's. Ask any 19-40 year old guy on the street how to get the there and they'll know the directions to at least one. But, if they want to go to Hull for a beverage you tell them to suck eggs.

And at Barberella's never order yourself food and eat it in "Perv's Row."

:D

Have a great time in the Capital

The most obvious is skate the canal - right on up to the ice sculptures on Dow's lake (maybe 30 minutes skate).

The ice is great this year because its been so cold. Who knows what it'll be in 2 / 3 weeks but its clean and fast now.

I would second the Museum of Civilization and Byward market for sure.

Cross country skiing is good here too if you like that.

Oh yeah!!! :P Yum...droooool....

(1st time I had one, eating it while standing in some lightly falling snow, there was a guy playing folk requests on an accoustic guitar...now that's a nice memory of Ottawa...)

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.

A tour of the parliament buildings, with a trip up to the top of the Peace Tower to take in a panoramic view of Ottawa, Gatineau, the river and the canal.

If any kids are coming on the trip, be sure to stop by the museum of Science and tech, my kids love it.
Later, leave the wife back at the hotel and head out to enjoy a drink at either one of these finer gentlemanly establishments, Fanny's, Barefax or Barbarella's. Bunk hit this one right on the nose, but no need to leave the wife at the hotel. As I recall, there is a club where the boys go down stairs and the ladies go upstairs. Then you meet in the middle afterwards. Can't recall the name though. Tell me that wouldn't leave an unforgetable memory of Ottawa. Oh ya, and something about beaver tails. 8)

Can we go up to the peace tower without a tour of the buildings? we have limited time and have decided to look just at the outside of the Parliment buildings. Walk around them if we can.

Also there seems to be 2 locations of major ice sculptures, Whats the differences and which should i visit? 1 is located at Dows lake and 1 i believe at confederation park and maybe even one at Jacques-cartier park. Can someone local point me out to the best one to visit as visiting all 3 is not an option. :?

Another question, the museum cost and length of time it will take to tour it proberly please. I am visiting the museum of civilization i believe and or maybe the aviation museum so please if anyone could give approximations it would be helpful for both.
Oh yes and eating we dont like anything to fancy so a nice steak house would be perfect . Anyone got the number to Als Steak House?

Thanxs for all the suggestions and hope to me you soon.

I just called them, yes, you can go up the Peace Tower without doing the whole tour. You can do it at any time during tours. I believe the last trip up the Peace Tower is one hour before the end of tours (3:20pm). Their phone number is 613-992-4793 or toll free 1-866-599-4999, their website for general info is http://www.parl.gc.ca/common/visitors.a ... l=37&Ses=1

You'll probably want to visit the ones that were carved later, as they tend to melt into unrecognizable blobs. I don't usually venture downtown so I don't know what state they're in. I would suggest the ice sculptures at Confederation Park, as they were done later and are within walking distance of Parliament Hill. I don't think Dow's Lake has any, but the Casino Lac Leamy in Gatineau has some that were done the first weekend. The snow sculptures are at Jacques Cartier Park, also in Gatineau.

Museum of Civilization: $10/adult (it's half price the day after you're there because of Heritage Day) Parking is $1.50/half hour, max $8.50. How long will it take? It can take a whole day, if you like looking at everything and reading a lot. There is a lot to see. I've never been able to see everything in one day. Hours are 9am to 5pm.

Aviation museum is smaller. They suggest 1 to 1.5 hours to visit. Open 10am to 5pm, $6 per person, free parking.

Hope this helps!
