The House of Fillets

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

My only thoughs is with the 6 holes cut.....I'd get rid of the holes and just make it 2 large rectangle cutouts.....gonna be easier to work with and gives you more room to put ice and snow that comes up when you redrill your holes....make sense?

It makes sense RJ, but you actually drill the holes outside, push the slush away (which is used to bank the ends) and then slide the hut over the holes. When I'm by myself, I only have to remove 2 hole caps. Also when the goblins are with me, there's less chance of the 20lb one falling in the trough.

The hut looks good Mark!!! I would advise against the vents... No need to add extra spots for drafts to come in... Make it a sliding window on your door like mine and thats good enough... COME ON ICE!!!!

ImageAnother thing you may consider Markus, when I built mine a few years ago, making the shelving collapsable and up as high as possible, while maintaining it's functionality was a great tip I got from someone.

If you're not using the shelf, just fold it and get it out of the way! You may have already had this suggestion, i'm too busy to read them all :!:

Thanks Wig. That's exactly how I'm building them.

Will you be working down this way again this winter?

Nice Hut

Post by Seaweed »

Nice Job Markus... 8)

Build six more and we can open up shop on Crappie Bay here at Petrie.

Raise some bucks for some prizes for Fish-hawk.net outings this year.

I was going to build something this year but we got our ice too soon... can`t see me building when I can be fishing.

Sorry... I know you have been waiting to get out on the ice. Lots up here.

Hut looks great! I'll take one! :D
You probably have them already.... but keep the hole cut-outs to fasten in while towing it to stop snow from getting in. I've had mine pop out while towing only to open the door to a foot of snow inside  :D
I've also been in some shacks where they used the styrofoam panels for added insulation. One shack you could keep warm with just a couple of candles burning.
Have fun!

Sorry Seaweed...    ...I forgot about this little mishap....

I barely survived going through an ice hut once on a Skiroule RTX snowmobile at about seventy miles an hour on the St. Lawrence because someone painted the ice hut white.

It had nothing to do with those quarts of Okeefe ale... honest.

They don`t stand out as well on a snowy white background when they are painted white.
Do you think you would have seen it if were black? I'm gonna put a few reflectors on it to protect it from all the sledders out there.

Markus, paint it both black and white like this... best of both worlds!

I have some questions ...

1) Markus, what is your shack framed with? It does not appear to be heavy 2x4s, but rather 1x2 or 1x3 strapping. Do my eyes deceive me? It looks solid, yet light.

2) Markus, is there any support for the floor besides the skis? Now, I'm not saying you're fat, but ... .

3) Everyone, to the question of floor support. What goes under the floor. That is to say, I would not want to just lay a 4x8 sheet of plywood on the ice. What do you do to keep it off the ice, and hence removable come spring?

BTW, the House of Fillets looks great.
Anyone else got pics of their shacks, and in particular, pictures of the building process?

Sorry Markus, just re-read first post ... blah blah blah, 2x4s for floor support ... blah blah blah.
By the way, I'm still not saying you're fat, but ... .

You got it MT. 2x4's for support. You can see in the pic how I notched them into the 2x6 ski's. Lay the floor on it and put the screws to it.

The rest is framed with spruce 2x2's. It's pretty sturdy....i can walk on the roof and it doesn't move.
