Tough bass

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Tough bass

Post by old guy »

Perhaps some thoughts from all the 'pro' bass fishers.
Fished the local Welland River from my canoe and I could see the bass schooled up beside the pilings.. I threw everything I could at them and they weren't interested. Actually I didn't use any live bait. The bass were like pets and just hung around the area. Perhaps some of you have experienced this as well. Any answers. If so I'll keep it in mind for next season.

You probably showed up two minutes after the buffet hour ended. I've witnessed this once before as well, and thought to myself...hmmm I bet I just missed a good feed on a school of baitfish or something....hmmm... wish I had that something on the end of my line right now, maybe someone's still a little hungry.

Could have been Asian Carp Fry and you just didn't have any Chinese food. And you know how sometimes you just get totally in the mood for Chinese. Smallmouth are the same, they eat a variety of specialty foods too.

old guy- I have been in the same situation for the past 2-3 weeks. I am on a huge school of bass (in the 100's) that have been driving me crazy.

I have been able to pick a bass or two out of the school on a daily basis, but it has been like pulling teeth. When they are just casually roaming and circling in an area, it is probably the toughest bite there is.

I have had some success at or just after dark, if that is any help. I managed a half dozen today during driving rain...

The strange thing is that these fish are really FAT, so they have been feeding- apparently just not when I'm around.

Like you, I have thrown everything at them. I have come to believe they will just not actively feed in this type of situation...

is it a possibility that they might be feeding exclusively on one type of minnow? Maybe they are keying on one thing and thats all they want....just a thought I dont know. Try to figure out the hatch and buy that type of minnows, might work.
