Well the answer is Whitefish.
But there is some grey area with this question. Thanks to Sam for bringing a second species classification chart to my attention. Both charts were issued by the MNR. One chart is broken into warm and cold water species. The other chart is broken into warm, cool and cold. Futher categories was fine. The cool water species on his chart were in fact all in the warm water on my chart. The odd thing was that on my chart, ling (also called Burbot) was listed as warm and on his it was listed as Cold.
So in fairness, anyone who voted for Ling...your are correct as well.

My buddy caught a ling last winter at our ice shack on the Mississippi in 8' of water. It was odd to say the least. We'd always herd some of the "well seasoned" (old timers) talking about ling in the Miss but never really believed it since they usually hide out in the depths with lakers.
Talk about an ugly fish. Just picture an eel tail mounted on a catfish head.

i knew what a ling was, i knew, we used catch 'bar-butts' (that's how we thought it sounded) with my uncle when we were kids! he would put them in the tub and let us play with them. we forgot them in the tub once..... i don't think my aunt ever recovered!! ahahahaahahahaah
i have no clue what's cold or warm species, and i'm not sure what makes a fish "cool", but i'm really learning alot from these polls.
yay marcus!!
ps. they may be ugly, but they tasted great hot off the Hibatchi!!!
