Well I'm back from Cecebe. It was a nice day, cloudy, overcast, but calm no wind and a few times the sun poked out of the clouds. The locals mentioned that there had been heavy rain the last few days and the weather was noticeably cool.
We got on the water about 9 am and decided to troll the shoreline with jointed rapalas and crankbaits. Didn't get as much a single hit.
While were were passing by the east side of the lake did notice a few weed/grass beds interspersed with small lilly pads. We decided to take a break trolling and try our luck at working the pads for bass. It tied on a surface bait (not sure who makes it; propeller front and a single back hook which you attach a small plastic worm to create a weedless bait). The buzzing of the lure over the surface did get me several hits and follows, but none of the fish appeared to be interested in going all out after the bait.
We headed around the lake staying mainly on the south end working both sides targeting isolated groups of pads and larger protected areas with lots of weed growth. Using the same topwater bait got me at least ten separate hits, but no hookups, needless to say the whole event was really frustrating.
In the afternoon we decided to fish a short channel connecting Cecebe to Goose Lake and did manage to catch two small walleye which were released. Worked more of the smale types of weedy shoreline structure and got many more hits, but again it just seemed like the fish were still lethargic and didnt have enough evergy to go all out for a moving bait.
Did finally manage to hook two fish, one a small smallmouth and I lost another larger fish in the grass beds about half way to the boat.
All in all a frustrating day. We were eventually blown off the lake around 6 p.m. by a storm system. I wanted to stick around till around 8 to see if the pike bite would start, but had top leave.
The most agravating part of the whole day was the $70.00 charge for a small 12 foot boat that was used for half a day. I really need to buy my own equipment.
I might go back in a week or two and try the lake again, but many people here on the board and on another board told me that the effort is better spent going somewhere else.
Back from Cecebe
sadly you're right, you're better off going somewhere else.... our best fishing was done on Nosbonsing (sp?), lots of pike but it's really shallow.... going up the Magnetwan (runs into Goose lake) is about the most productive place in that particular area.... Wassi lake is also nice and it's way outta the way....
