Waiting for the opener is really getting expensive!

We have a Bass Boat and if we go out before Bass opener, we get accused of fishing for OSS Bass.
The boat don't run so good on ice and I'm to poor to go south.

This is nonsense. I truly believe guys that spend all year fishing for everything that swims become way better bass anglers and anglers as a whole. Being on the water nearly year round gets you more in tune to what is going on once your "season" starts.

I really don't give a hoot what people think I'm fishing for.
We are on the Ottawa River on opening day. Looking for big Pike.
We don't mind the accidental walleye and we keep away from the Bass Spawning beds.
And if we are lucky, we hit some very big crappies.
We just never bother posting pics of what we catch other than the occasional Bass when Bass Season opens.

We should look into getting our passports. We could fish for American Bass on their side of the St. Lawrence.

Ah ok I wondered, I can't keep up with you guys..

As for those who don't enjoy Crappie fishing that is fine with those who do. I fish year end for basically everything that swims in Eastern Ontario and NO fish makes me scratch my head as much as Crappies do. By FAR the most nomadic fish in our area that will drive you nuts when chasing them. Catching them is easy once you've found them but finding them is one of the biggest challenges in fishing in my eyes.

As an example, today Big Jim and I spent 6 hours on his local lake. We fished 6 distinct areas that at one time or another have held Crappie. We found em in a 20 x 20 foot area that held a bunch of fish we just beat up. We easily could have slid by that area as it was pretty much like everywhere else we fished but there they were.



On the ride home I said, "Imagine if Bass were that tough to catch? People would lose their minds"..

I'd trade any 5 Lb Largie I've caught for a true 15 inch Crappie any day of the week! WAY more rare of a fish.

... on a (Bass) tournament day I would trade "rare" for 5 lb largies.

We don't try to target crappie but we sometimes run into them and the larger ones put up a real good fight.

Now that is the sort of thing that would be of interest to me, a large specimen as Big Jim is showing. And as I have never caught one of that grandeur, I truly did not even think they existed in our neck of the woods, only as a rarity. But your photographic evidence sure shows me another species to consider.

I've NEVER caught a crappie.. Now I really want to!
