I wondered if somebody could share some tips on how to properly handle landed fish; specifically walleye and pike. I'd like to learn how to do it in a way that puts the fish (and my fingers) at as little risk as possible.
There is lots of stuff on the internet on this subject and most is pretty good. Here's one for pike - it works - just be careful not to damage the gills when you are trying to find the spot forward of the gill plate just behind the fish's jaw.
invest in some boga grips (or other simmilar products) these can save fingers and enable you to unhook fish in the water. as for holding pike in the gills i need to learn. i usually just grab them around the head.
In the link posted, it says to put two fingers on each side of the gill plates... I usually just 'pick a side' and put 3-4 on that side then support the body.
I haven't caught any walleye of size, so they've been quite 'grab-able'. Actually, I hardly ever catch a fish of any decent size!!
best tool i ever bought, it was 34 dollers and i would have spent 70 if it was that much. its by berkley and its like two clamps that you put on the fishes bottom lip u just pull up and the clamp opens put it on its lip and then let go and you have the fish, you dont touch it (no slime loss), you dont touch it (no finger loss)
its a great tool
they make it in pistol shape to if you want a smaller one
