e-Tec vs 4 Stroke

Post by fishboch »

Hi all,

Well like many I am in the market for a new ride and have been shopping around and hopefully I will find something in my price range before the season gets here.

I recently came across the Evinrude E-Tec engines and did some research on them and like anything they have their supporters and their critics but what I would like to hear from some 4 stroke owners are comments on servicing.

Evinrude claims that because the E-Tecs have less complex parts to break down they require less servicing and only need to go in once every 3 years whereas some 4 strokes need servicing every 4 or 6 months.

So I would just like to hear from some owners who have switched from 2 stroke to 4 stroke. Do you find that the 4's are more complex and therefore requiring more trips to the dealer for servicing or more frequent and expensive servicing schedule or are they as some people claim pretty much bullet proof.

Thanks

Yes I agree, I have done a bit of reading and those e-tecs seem to be the bee's knees :P :P
I have never owned a 4 stroke but if I was in the market for a new ride I would try and find an E-tec.
From what I read; all the benefits of the 4 stroke but its a 2 stroke!!

ETEC

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

ETEC and the service window is OK. Have not seen any issues with letting service go to their suggested limit because of the technology

If our government was on the ball they would get BRP to become a car company and put the big 3 to shame......my opinion 8) 8) 8) 8)

Imagine your vehicle getting 20% better gas mileage :D :D and NO OIL CHANGES :D :D and that is possible with an ETEC engine 8) whether it's a boat or car.

The gas and oil companies would not like that and so wouldn't the government, 20% drop in GST from gas sales

Well, hate to disappoint you but 60HP Yamaha is lighter than 60HP ETEC
So no "security" for you
You right about the oil and other points but don't tell this to ETEC groupies they will be all over you !

Now that is funny :D You have to be kidding right ? Now tell me why Mercury went out and bought every aluminum boat company ...... oh yeah because they knew Evinrude had the better motor so if they by all the aluminum where does Evinrude hang their motors other than fiberglass. And my favorite is the optimax /evinrude comparison that mercury boasts on their website. They compare against the evinrude in the 1800 rpm range because it is the only range they beat them in fuel efficiency, noise, oil consumption blah blah blah.Who here drives their boat in that range. So to say Evinrude's marketing is a lie is just a blatant lie .How about you back that statement up and i will kill every argument you have because it is not even a comparison.Have fun with your black anchor

Mercury is a multi billion dollar global conglomerate....they make and sell marine engines....so do a lot of other companies, none of whom sell as many engines as Mercury.....Marine engine technology turns over pretty quickly.....do you really believe that Mercury made multi billion dollar growth decisions because many people believe that the E-Tec is a better engine? Do you? Seriously? Wouldn't it have been cheaper to simply hire all of the E-Tec engineers? Whaddya figure, maybe 20 guys tops involved in the design of that engine? Give em each a million a year in salary and tell them to make a better engine would of been a lot cheaper, no?

I recently bought a Pro V with a 150 Verado on it.

I dont have a lot of seat time but...........this motor is one sweet machine.

Let me make this clear BEFORE I BOUGHT MY PROV I DID NOT WANT A MERCURY MOTOR WHATSOEVER! Made my skin crawl thinking of a black hunk of junk on the back of nmy new boat.

I had my heart set on a Alumacraft with a 150 ETEC. Well Alumacraft let me down at the boat show, therefore no ETEC because of the Mercury domination in other boats which is total BS.

Found a Pro V with a 150 Verado and took the plunge, and I am happier than a pig in sheet!

Like I said my seat time is limited to half a dozen times out but so far so I love it, The thing has got some JAM. The smartcraft......well that is just amazing, trolls down to 650 rpms with the touch of buttion, no tweaking the throttle just press and enjoy.

Maintenance cost?? Who cares.....if your gonna play your gonna pay nothing is cheap anymore. Oil change once a year and your good to go.
