Fishing in Cuba Cayo Coco

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Fishing in Cuba Cayo Coco

Post by RBKizzel »

Good day
So……its official I am going to Cuba. Trust me it is long over due.
I was thinking about trying my luck with some fishing while I am down there we are staying at the mealia cayo coco has any one fished around there?

I was thinking maybe, bones cudas or sea bass I know that trips “deep sea” can be expensive if you book through the resort. I was hoping that someone might have more info, or know of a local guide or spot that we could cab to.

I have heard that the rods and tackle that they provide are should we say primitive. Is that true or would I be best to bring my own gear?

Any help would be great

Well when I went to Cuba I stayed near Santiago de Cuba....South east part of the island....not far from Guantanamo bay.....This guy book a boat through the resort and asked people if they'd like to come....think we paid like 40 bucks each....so maybe inquire if anyone else has made plans to go fishing and hook up with them...sure they probably wouldn't mind.....The guy also brought some of his own tackle...but we caught all the fish on theirs....Cuda, Tuna, and Ciara.....and man did they ever taste great!!!

Well best of luck......i'd say don't go for any certain fish....cuz you never know what you're gonna get in the ocean!!

p.s. the tuna was the hardest fighter....and he was only about 6lbs!!! Cuda was 8-9lbs....and man do they ever have teeth!!!

I found this website that has information on fishing in Cuba from travellers. I actually hooked up with a guy from Toronto through that site. We shore fished from our resort on Cayo Ensenachos. We caught a few small fish with some shrimp from the resort. We both brought spinning gear. Besides booking a fishing trip through the hotel or other charter boat operator you can find Do it Yourself (DIY) opportunities but they are putting fishing bans in some areas. Cayo Coco may be one.

Hope it all goes well.

If you are going around the first week in May my buddies will be there at that resort. They are going deep sea fishing through the resort and I think it was $100.00. I was going but with the new kid it is to hard to travel far right now. Hey love my kid to death and will be up at the cottage now with him for the first time. We and I mean me will be fishing as well. Hope he will catch his first trout!!

Anyway everyone that I have spoken to have told me to bring your worst gear if going as they sometimes don't make it or come back with you. Also was told to try and find a local to take you fishing on the flats for bones. They always get the fish.

Cuba is awesome for offshore billfishing/tuna and bottom fishing for snapper, grouper, it's basically the same as florida,I used to fish the hemingway annual billfish tourney in havana, when I had my charter boat.,back when Americans weren't allowed to come past the docks for supplies (political ban on doing biz in cuba).,.........wait,we still aren't allowed there. I think that you will find the price of a charter boat about the same as stateside. but,if you get away from the tourist areas, you can find some old fisherman and toss him a few bucks to take you out for a few hours.

The charter boat is a set price and can only be booked through one company. Cost is about 250 convertable pesos for 1/2 a day....I believe. A lot of the time they don't really go deep sea fishing and just go off shore. One guy on Cubamania did go off shore and caught a nice sailfish but that is a full day. I'm guessing the cost is about $500. Go to Cubamania and post, they will tell you the details exactly. There are tarpon in the channels within the resort. Also you can rent a hobbie for $20 pesos an hour. They supply rods and bait. There is pretty good tide fishing. Fish on both high tides at the bridge between Cayo Coco and Ramano. In looking at google earth that looks promising. Also there is a flat past the mangroves on the beach. Turn right. Make sure you get flat boots and great polarized glasses if you do that. Fishing is supposed to be so-so on that flat but I have read reports of some bones. PM me if you go to that bridge. I'd like to hear how you do.
