Mississippi 8th May

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Mississippi 8th May

Post by SkeeterJohn »

Just got back from a trip up to mississippi with big-o and topwater today. The convoy of 2 boats that met in ottawa at 5:00am was joined at the 416 split by JP who led the way before turning off in carlton place to put in elsewhere on the lake.

I ended up having a mixed bag but no walleye and then later in the day a fill of crappie some pictured below... they don't look as big in the pictures but they're a nice size for sure. Heck they can't be a bad size when you can hold them like bass

[Spot the fish-hawker to be  She's staring at the fish in the livewell :D ]

Good to see RJ and bacon who were in the baitcasters tourney and had a pike on their line as i pulled up.... also stoped and had a chat with fish-hawk and took a few pictures of his new ride.. also pictured below..

Thanks again big-o for persuading me to give mississippi a go this weekend it was nice to try a new lake i'd never been on and it was a heck of a lot closer than i thought... no doubts i'll be up there again.

As we were pulling the boats out a guy at the ramp said he had a 6lb walleye but wasn't fishing the tourney. He said he comes on here but i forget what his name was.. perhaps he's reading this.

Great looking Crappie John. They'll taste great for sure. Good to hear RJ will have some fish to weigh in.

Launched right after Big O, Topwater and John today at the launch, but never got a chance to say hello.

I fished the tournament today and came in 8th place. Could not find the big ones :? but we did weigh in 2 walleye and 2 pike. We were catching the walleye in the deep holes 22+ feet with jig and minnow...just drag'n bottom with a small lift and then set the hook on the smallest tick or pickup. All of the pike where caught trolling just over the new weed growth 5ft down over 10 feet of water. The Cotton Cordell Silver shad seem to be the bait that was driving the pike crazy today. We caught about 21 fish today but they where all little guys.
Was a great day and got to meet a lot of hawk-talkers...just wish we could of found those big fish.

I will let Fishhawk announce his great day... :D :D (Congrats Fishhawk and Mick)

Going to head out tommorrow morning for a few eyes to have a nice eye fry for lunch.

I would also like to thank Mike and Crystal @ Bait Casters for another great tournament and all of the nice prizes.

til' next time...

John & Eye Tracker,

sounds like a fun day, with some decent action, if not lunkers.

Markus, didn't you and your wife fish the tournament, too?

We launched off of Grasshopper point today.

No walleye ( again...see my Opening day blues post) but did have fun catching what seemed like everything else including a Carp!

Man was it cold this morning!

Great day at Mississippi today! Met some Hawk Talkers that I had never previously met, of course there were a bunch from the board that I had previously met and it was good to get re-acquianted and talk about the upcoming Muskrat trip, and Fish Hawk and I turned in a 2nd place showing. We were catching fish doing everything today. It was alot of fun and really strange at the same time. We caught lots of fish in 2 feet and under and lots of fish in 30+. And much like Eye Tracker - we didn't really get into anything big. Fish everywhere but nothing big. The biggest fish we had we lost. But it gets the heart a pounding when Lilly, as excitable as he is, has a nice one on in a foot of water. We had a great day and we were really quite lucky. Only about a pound and a half difference between 5th and 2nd but a looooooooooooooooong way up from 2nd to first. We had 7 something for 2nd and 1st was over 12! Congrats to the Pro Lund team that won.

Muskrat is just around the corner now!

Thanks for taking that pic of the Mike's new boat John, he will be very happy with that.

Hi Guys & Gals

Had a great time today with John and topwater We caught our limit of crappies , alot of them in 12 to 13 inch range(dinner Plates).....now you know why we never enter in tournys...we never catch the right type fish :?
The new 9.9 works like a dream...even if the ninty was dead, or I should say the battery was dead  had to keep boosting the main battery by using the trolling motor batterys :x Sorry I did'nt get to talk to many hawkers today, I did see a pile of Fish-hawk hats today(I think we dominated the water today)I did get to meet Jim Little today,he was the gentlmen that caught the 6lbs walleye  Jim is a registered member of the board...i hope he gives all a tip or two on how to catch those big eyes  NICE talking to you jim...Topwater will post your picture! I also got to talk to two great guys at the boat launch as we were leaving...they were going back out..sorry i didn't get your names ...they told me a story on how ..I think it was one of thier fathers caught multiple catfish using a MOP...I will leave that story telling to them ...It's a great story and i don't want to screw it up :D

Bacon,RJ sorry guys I was in the middle of the mop story when you guys came a callin  I hope all the anglers had a good time today...I know i did 8)

Today was a blast even though the fish didn't really co-operate for Bacon and I all that well....undersized pike and other non-tourney fish were our quarry today unfortunately... :x

Without 2 walleye in the well there was no point to us in keeping any pike unless we thought they may be big fish of the day....walleyes seemed to be tough to find for alot of guys today.....which made me feel ok... :? ...because nothing worse than hearing guys had boat loads of them....but that didn't happen...

Was surely great to see all the hawk-talkers out there....can't wait for Muskrat!

Big-O, no biggie....I know where to find you if I need a talkin to...

Congrats surely goes out to Fish-Hawk and Mick....nice work boys!

Eye Tracker ...we were marking tons of fish today across that point , but no matter what type of bait ,color, size....we had no takers did you pick your eyes around that point?????? Thats a great looking ride you have....I see you have ...what about 4 rod holders on each side?i have to get some for mine...I was looking at the rocket launcher type ...$95.00 U.S a piece   I think I'll keep looking :?

That point is called Grasshopper point,

We caught one eye...and got into a tonne of pike. We were working the ledge where the main basin of the lake comes up to 10ft...when we would cross the 10ft point we would have a fish on. We were using the small Huskey Jerks (Clown), Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow (Clown) and Shad Raps (Silver Black) Trolling speed was 1.9mph. There is a small pocket off the south side of the point that holds fish...on the north side of the point it is a large sand flat, this can also produce lots of fish some days. Once the weeds come up a bit around the point, you can rip jigs throught the weeds and get some nice eyes.

Big-O the rod holders I use are the Scotty's. I use their Triple Rod Holder...works great when you run inline planer boards.
