Hi Everyone,

I will be running the second FH fly swap. The theme for the swap will be your "Favourite Stillwater Dropper & Chironomid". In the spirit of using two or more flies for stillwater fishing, this swap will be for three different patterns from each participant.

Hi fellow fly swappers,

Since I was hoping to have 10 participants (20 flies total) and we only have 6 tiers (12 flies total), would you guys be willing to tie a third pattern? It would make the cost of shipping more worth our while. Let me know if you're interested, otherwise we'll stick with the 2 patterns.

That's great guys :D I've heard from 5 of the 6 tiers about tying three patterns. Everyone so far is game for it. I should hear back soon from Simon B. If he's unable to tie a third, I'll tie up the extra set. So, let's go ahead with the swap with the three patterns each. Send me a PM your third pattern selection.

I've heard back from everyone and we're on for three patterns each. There are a total of 6 tiers in the swap with each tier tying 3 patterns (18 flies total). The deadline for submitting the flies is January 15th. I've PM'd everyone my address to send the flies.

Skinny Nelson
The Skinny Nelson is a small nymph that can be taken as baetis nymph or a midge pattern. It’s an easy and quick pattern to tie.

Emerald & Copper
In clear lakes bright green patterns are key. The Emerald & Copper is tied small for use in clear marl bottom waters where smaller species of chironomid are present.

Ice Cream Cone
The Ice Cream Cone is used in stained waters where it stands out from a distance. It’s best fished near bottom suspended under a strike indicator. I’ve tied it on a heavy wire hook with a tungsten bead so it will sink quickly. As for which ribbing to use, I read that when fishing a chironomid deep it’s best to use copper or red wire. On bright sunny days try using silver wire.

Black Sally
Black is the predominate colour of chironomid pupae especially during spring. The Black Sally is a great choice for this time of year.

Yellow Okey Dokey Buzzer
Okey Dokey's are one of the favourite buzzer pupa styles in use across the UK. They’re best described as “love them or loathe them, they catch fish.” They’re effective for both rainbow trout and brown trout. Popular colors are white/yellow, white/orange, white/green. It can be fished either singly with a floating line and a long leader, or under a strike indicator, or in a team of buzzers.

Chan’s Pheasant Tail Chironomid
The Pheasant Tail Chironomid is one of Brian Chan’s patterns. It’s fished with a floating line and a long leader. The fly is designed to sit just below the surface film to mimic a chironomid emerger. It can also be tied with different colours of dyed pheasant tail.

This isn't meant to be spam, I have a link to a tying sequence for at least a couple of the flies here. One is the Chromie and the other is the Ice Cream Cone. A couple others on the subject of nymphs are the PTNand the GRHE. I hope they are of use. I don't get to post tying sequences very often at the moment but I've been known to take requests.... like the Paradake.
