Mississppi smallies (pics!) last sunday report

Post by YakAttack »

Sunday was a beautiful day to putt around in the rowboat with my wife and her mom, hunting for smallmouth. Spent a few hours in the afternoon throwing plastic crayfish and crayfish coloured tubes...

First one worth mentioning:

My first ever walleye! Nice surprise since we were fishing shallow water, bright and sunny afternoon

'Nuther smallie - nice and shiney
<img src="http://www.fish-hawk.net/photogallery/a ... 7_1426.jpg">

After supper, I was casting from the shoreline and caught my biggest of the day...didn't have the camera, but there were witnesses

I caught around 20 fish that day, mostly smallies, a couple rock bass. Fun! My wife caught a couple of pike but wouldn't let me post them. :D

Yak you're not the only one that messes up between smallie and largie.

I usually just call them "bass" just to be sure.

Hiya Yak...

Great day of fishing. Those walleyes have been keeping some of us on our toes this summer, biting in the mid day under a blazing sun.

Nice pic's and nice fish!

Thx for the fun report.

W.

PS: ya know, the technical way to differentiate the largies from the smallies is their mouth. But I always go by the horizontal stripe (following the lateral line) on the largemouth, vs the barring feature on most smallmouth (vertical lines). After a while, it becomes easy enough to know them at a glance.

Either way, nice bass!

Thanks Wolfe. I can never tell by the mouth ... I do know about the bars vs stripe way to identify them - I think I just assumed it was a smallie since that's pretty much all we were landing, and didn't take a close enough look. But thanks for the tip! :)

'nuther way I use to identify them is the dorsal fin....largie's dorsal fin has two peaks, and the valley reaches the body, while the smallie's fin has two peaks, but the valley does not reach the body. Hope that made sense

I guess we all have our personal preference of ID'g the bass. I'll have to pay closer attn to those dorsal fins next time I land one (hopefully sooner than later)! We'll be heading back up this week. Yeah!

Stripes, fins, mouths...and of course the different fight they give you. The line rushing for the top of the water and insane acrobats: smallie; the huge headshaking and "bulldawging": largie. I'm sure there are those that cross over and do a little of everything, but on the average, that's what I find.

OK...now I want to get out there and kick some BASS! :D
