TROUT IN HULL.......next week

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Hey Joco,

I cannot wait this year. It is great to hear the fish being stocked are 7 inches at the smallest.....I was the king of brown trout minnows last year :x .

Orvis GreenDrake has asked me to do a fly-tying demo for La Fete de la Peche, and I will be there sunday at 10-12 and 1-3. Come say hi if you see me.

I should be there quite frequently to catch the evening rise, it can be quite fun on little dry flies.

Damn I won't be able to make the weekend as I'm gone camping.

I know my daughters going to be disappointed she had a blast last year.

Oh well I may just have to take her for a few hours shore trashing.

Hey Joco,

I know this has been done for a few years now but I'm still puzzled by it....why not generate interest in species that already exist in our area?...just seems odd to me to stock trout in that creek that will be caught for a week or two then die in the river....or become Pike snacks....seems like a waste of potential dollars for our resource....

TROUT IN HULL.......next week

As I recall last year, little shrimp and / or worms did the trick. Any thoughts on the type of shrimp - i bought PC brand ones from Loblaws last time around.

Cheers!

Quebec is great at doing this sort of thing. When I was building the Snowflake Kingdom at Jacques Cartier Park this past winter, the MNRF built a 40X40 containment net in the Ottawa river for the kids to ice fish for specks and bows. From 8" up to 5lbs and almost 8000 of the little buggers. When I asked how they were gonna get them out they said they were gonna cut one side of the net and release them all into the river. He said they'd likely all perish in that stretch of river though he speculated that some may try to make Brasserie their spring home... dunno, seems like a waste of fish to me.

I'll chime in on this one here......

Is it a cool program? Sure.... Trout, ya everyone loves to have a snack of the small ones, and sometimes a few crayfish for a side dish

But seriously......

The creek drains, or goes to nill during freeze up.

The fish exurte themselves tryin to forage on a small city Cr, with the only haven other than deeper pools and said existing structure is the Ottawa River at the end of the down flow way.

RJ said "A nice Pike snack" Yuppers RJ, along with Smallies, Eye's and for sure cat's and other predators who might hang in the mouth region, or in this said section of the Ottawa...

I'm not a Biologist or am I employed by the MNR either... But if you want I can ask for a good friend(Who is) input from his hand, to which we have spoken of this topic before.

The Ottawa R, awsome River indeed!! World class fishery for many, and potential to hold many areae's of fish.

Area said for stocking "Trout"......... The lower section is brutally warmer than the upper say Pembroke, more traffic, buisness waste dumpage (Not saying it's to dirty) But the water out here IMO cannot sustain a healthy turn around of any type of salmonoid :? There is not enough forage for them to tend to before another fish species either gets it 1st, or the trout becomes the forage 1st!

For any sort of a turn around possible the area of said stocking, should 1st and formost be "NON-FISHABLE" the mortality rate to ANY TYPE OF stocked fish is ENOURMUS ON ANY SYSTEM!!!! It takes yrs to re-introduce a species to if any sort of healthy level, and puttin 300 anglers on a small Cr with freshly stocked farmed fish to have at em  Good Luck. You need to TRY to "INTRODUCE" these fish, not put em in a Cr and say ok, let's have at em

Worth a try? SURE, Why Trout, I dunno either, Eye's stand a much better chance with the surroundings.

And lord knows, someone luckily lands one of those said stocked 5+lbers.... Fish is....DEAD!

Stocking a cold water fish into a warm water area ESP AT 5+lbs, the culture shock will prolly knock off over 50% of them 1st, and then another 25% will become forage, and the 15% that land on a hook at 7"s or even 12" will be so stressed by a hook in face and out of water, they are gone too. And IF luckily the remaining 10%, 5 of who don't see a dinner plate, and the remaining 5% who might make it out into the river and maybe get on.... You'll be awfull hard pressed to find em anywhere near where they were stocked, if they do survive.

The MNR and OFAH Have and are STILL Trying to "RE-INTRODUCE" Atlantic Salmon to LAKE ONTARIO, and we are talking close to 3 MILLION Fish this spring alone  and a ton of people think it's a waste of money, and it might very well be. This is a hugely funded program, nothing like 5000 into the Ottawa R. It's a big river, and not to many nice cool run-off tributaries in the said area to try in, most Cr's are 90% through spring, summer and mostly fall are: weed/bass/pike infested and stagnant water surrounded.

But heck, I've tossed my input thus far in, but IMO, for the kids, there are many more bluegills to catch for a fun time 8)

the only thing i can say.

its a familly thing and its for fun and we get about 15 000 people on the weekend.

they put them in there to get caught,,not to stock the creek.

they put some browns trout in to..last year they were small but the year before they were nice size....and they can live in are water...i caught some nere aylmer...and other programmes stock brown in ottawa river soon.

i do no it could be waste off $..but still.at least they try to get the people and kids to get some fish and have fun. and try to get the kids intterested in fishing.

the programmes they gave kids in the weekend is pretty good.

they have a one hour course wit the game warden explaning everything on fish anf habitate etc...and after they get a free rod/reels tackle...free...

nice off them.

like i said at least something is done....and people are enjoying a lot that fishing weekend.

by the way its non fishing permit weekend that weekend on the quebec side.....( but dont no about non resident) but if its a non permit why should they ask... 8) .

hope to see a lot off you down there.

its not just about fishing its a major party tons off thing over there.

its something to see.......

ask people that been there.

Alright Joco:

Stock a species into a system for one reason (Per you) 15,000 or 1500??? people turn out, and 5000 fish dropped.......

There is a TON O fishin spots for kids to slay gills, perch, crappie, bullheads and so on.... So lets drop a pile of trout into a system, to where maybe 10% or so will be caught/eaten, or maybe released......

and the other 90% will die off or subdue a forage death??????????

Dump a pile of friggin creek chub in then, it's cheaper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's spend the cost to raise 5000+ fish to toss em into a barrel and see if they survive

But for the kids, lets stock trout, and let everyone get thier fill, forget bout the 4800 that will just die off and heck, we will do it again next yr because it aint our money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If this is ALONE For a weekend outing for kids and families to get out to fish non tag needed, I'll do myself a favor and contact a few local "Trout Farms" to try to organize a "Catch And Kill" day, as to where most farms DO NOT require a tag to fish

That way we can all have fun killin 7" fish

just come down and look at those kids catching fish a LOT off fish .there smile is worth a lot.

i still no saying its ok or not.

better do something then nothing.

i do no its sad to see some fish die. :?

mnr have a number that can be call for all consern about this subject.

they are the one responsible. for all those project for kids. all over the province in the same weekend.

still think its a great initiative. to do a fishing weekend.

and to get kids involve into fishing wit the course and theye free equipement plus a chance to get a trout. because its local in there backward,,,,some off those kids dont ever go fishing other then there and there parents dont fish....

that place were the fishing weekend is done is a place were they are a lot off kids that are in poor area or familly...its nice to see them having fun and get there trout.

usely there almost nothing in that creek. :?

but there alway some trout living because people catch some at trout openeing in april....in that pool nere the theater.
