Hey guys, Im moving out to Banff in 3 weeks, got a job at the Fairmont Banff Springs! Anyways im wondering if anyone has ever fished out there / if soooo what are some tips! Thanks a million, and yes ill be posting pics and reports from out west! I cant wait

Hey pikes_pipes; what a great place you are going to. I actually worked out at Jasper Park Lodge way back in the late seventies for two summers and had a blast. Never actually did any fishing out there so I can't help you out. Being in a National Park I am not sure what the restrictions are but I know you will be in a great location in the Rockies. Let us know how you do out there.

get some skis its the onlything that can compare to fishing..... theres still some nice fishing too

might want to try some of the lakes in there there supposibly great

Just out of Banff there are two spots ... via the Minnewanka Loop, the lake itself, and the steam flowing into Two Jacks Lake. Nice and close and I never even saw another flyfisherman there.
You will know you are there when you drive up and the lake just pops out of no-where - you have to drive over a big man-made levy to get to the Two Jacks stream ... from what i remember ...

Lots of great places to fish out there. Check out Monod Sports on the main drag. It's a flyshop that can give you advice on fishing opporunities or guiding services. Vermillion lakes are a short walk from the town and contain rainbows. The Bow River is a little treacherous in Banff, but there's fishable water downstream and upstream. Get yourself a 4wt or 5wt flyrod to really enjoy the fishing out there.

Be very careful if you go out alone...you'll be in grizzly country and they are extremely dangerous.

Don't know much about Banff fishing, but like Hitman, I worked for a summer in Jasper at the lodge('77). I fished alot around the area. The Athabasca River was where most of it was done. Great fishing for Dolly Varden and Rainbows. Also nabbed a few pretty decent Whitefish in there too. One of the best hotspots was where the Maligne River flowed into the Athabasca.

Another vote for fly fishing on the Bow.

If you have never gone fly fishing there are some great guides that will take you out for a day and if you shop around the course often includes you keeping the rod. Well worth the price.

Thanks for all the tips guys, and no I have never fly-fished in my life, but cant wait... and no haha I doubt I'll be going on any adventures alone in the rockies due to the grizzleys haha! And yeah the restrictions are fairly tight! I gotta de-barb all my hooks, thro out all my lead weights and such! Im flying out April 14th, and will surely have pictures uploaded not long after that! Im gonna miss fishing at my cottage this summer tho

Pike_pipes,

Make sure you study each trout species very carefully. By law in Alberta, you have to be able to tell the difference between a bull trout, a brook trout, a brown, etc. If a CO stops you, he/she will test you on this knowledge. Failing could cost you a few $$$$.

yeah i guess a book on trout wont be a bad idea for on the plane reading eh? haha and I know the regs. are pretty strict! thanks for all the help guys~

at local alta tackle shops you'll find
a book that indicates water location and species, directions etc
that will get you started as said in above post read your regs

live bait ,hooks , etc are strict out there

out in bc faimount area loads of beaver ponds that hold fish
might need to get a topo or chum up with a local

came from calgary used to fish ponds all the time
spray lakes another place to check out

Spent 8 weeks in Banff.....

Lots of places to go fishing BUT Watch out for Da bears

The hotel is Beautiful
Take lotsa scenery pics because the mountains are beautiful
and get ready for the vacationers

haha "get ready for the vacationeers" haha thats a good thing right, yeah like I said b4 I doubt i'll be going into the backcountry alone very often, atleast not until I get familarized with everything.. and thanks again guys, I honastly cant wait to catch a trout, as sad as it may seem, I've never fished trout in my life, and am moving to a trout factory
