Ice Fishing Line

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Ice Fishing Line

Post by -Smitty- »

just wondered what people use for line when they're ice fishing??

i was given a spool of some ice fishing line that is very thick black braid, the same as what came on the tip-ups i bought. do you tie that directly to your hook or do you tie on a leader??

a bit new to this so just wondering what people are using, or doing with the braided line like i have.

thanks

The black line is good on tipups but i usually just tie on a snap swivel on the end of it. Then I have pre-rigged lenghts of Fluorocarbon leaders, that I put on the snap. Cause some days your tip up will be used for Pike other days as a second line for light biting eyes. So carry a bunch of different pre-rigged leaders.

Ps you said you were given a spool??? somebody found it ?? If it is not new stuff not more than 3years old then you can use it. it should be written on the spool the Lbs test of the line. I use 50 most of the time on my tipups. If it is an older spool then I would chuck it.
