Making wooden lures
Hi there "J" Here a few you can try: www.johnsonfamilylures.com
www.makefishinglures.com
www.usa5.com/lures/
Making your own wooden lures is a great hobby. Best woods are basswood, cedar(red preferably) and of course balsa. Stay away from hardwoods. Patterning and designing the bait is the easy part. Finding good hardware and the painting process are the most critical aspects of making your own lures. It's a satisfying feeling to catch a huge lunge on a jerkbait you designed yourself!
Good luck, let me know how it turns out.

Here's a site that has a forum for lure carving.
http://tackleunderground.com/
Hope it helps - a great deal of satisfaction can be derived from amking your own lures, lots of fly tyers but you don;t hear much about lure carvers.

So I have been pounding at the wood and woodworking tools and finally made my 1st prototype, took it down to Black Rapids to do some water testing ( Baitgirl, yes I did and I really really loved it, thank you
)
It didn't work well at all but believe it or not I am very pleased
.
Oh sure I would have been tickled pink if it ran perfectly and even more thrilled if it had caught a fish but I learn more from trial and error than I do from my successes.
I have gone thru a lot of wood coming up with my design and today's failure will open the door to a much better design becuase I have already taken what I have learned from today and modified my design and really like it a lot more than my previous ones and will be out tomorrow at the water giving it a test too.
Making lures is tough work, it is also very expensive because you really need to do a lot of experimenting to get things just perfect but catching a fish on a lure you have made, or having someone else catch a fish on a lure I have made is priceless.

Took my lure down to Black Rapids today.
I had slightly modified it from yesterdays trial and boy was I completely impressed with how it ran.
Perfect and straight and the action was just what I had been hoping for.
Unfortunatly due to over cast conditions and water clarity I couldn't get a good look at how deep it ran.
So I made 2 more with a slight adjustment to what I think makes the lure run at certain depths but until I get to use a pool I just won't know for sure.
But heck I am really pleased that all of this hard work and trial and error seems to have paid off witha lure I am initially very pleased with.
