The boat and sportsman show

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

havven't been to the Ottawa show for years, Carp is the best for this area, and it get's better every year, plus it's in April and this signifies the start of the season just a few weeks away - not months

spent Saturday driving to and from Ed's, good turn out, the wife got a new rod, I got a hat :!:

Then went to Greendrakes for some more bucktail - expensive day

I was geting the itch to go until my wife said REMEMBER!! You told me to remind you to not waste your time going to the show this year...and she was right. Last year I went after a couple years of not going and was through it in 20 minutes. Very disappointing. So..I took Joco's advice and went to Gatineau and strolled through the mall early Sunday morning. No stores open, hardly any people, calm and perfect. Just enough to get it out of my system. Going to do the same next weekend also for the fishing show.
The show to go to now for sportsmen in Ottawa is the Carp show. Hopefully that one will not get too greedy or loose sight of what the market wants. I know I have no interest in looking at skidoos or yaughts.

A few observations on Shows and Fish Hawk in general

Post by Big Jim »

Every year there is a group of people, and not the same ones who attend shows and complain to no end about the whole deal and not just this show that is why I used the word "general".

I used to be a bit dismayed myself as an angler, but if you notice the only people complaining are "anglers" like me. It is the same everywhere. Very few of the dozens of shows are called "fishing shows", heck last year at the Bass Pro Shops sale there was bunches of people bad mouthing that too??? after it was over and they had spent 3 days there????.

They are not fishing shows...they are outdoors and boat shows for the most part, along with fishing and a bit of entertainment thrown in for the value. The parking money is the City so complain to your councillor not other anglers if you want a change. Drink one less beer and the parking is covered.

Take this to heart boys and girls....use of the internet like this is hurting what you and I love to do and it is the only sport or hobby I know of that it is happening.

Can anyone tell me what it is about anglers and bad mouthing on the internet??? It is currently the number 1 wonder of the world in my books.

I have been going to mentions this for a long time now and I guess this was the time. It really isn't so much to do about the shows as it is the crap that is growning on Fish-Hawk.

I have been going to boat shows for years and I take them for what they are

BIg Jim is right , what do you expect . All the glitz and glory of a superbowl .
I went twice, once to check out what was there ,walk around meet new people and converse with some people I knew would be there.
The second time I brought my daughters Lyndsay -10 and Robin-9 , both were excited to go .We tried out the casting pond ,Bigjim tried to coax a candy apple off my girls , we had a hot dog a drink . went on some big boats and picked up some brochurs on where we might travel this summer.

We had a great time , and I didn't expect anymore!!!!

IT's a social event , opportunity to check out new technology , a place where under one roof you can get the whole package if only a little of everything . would you be happier if there was no show at all???

If you want more , go to a bigger show .T.O. has more show because they have a bigger market.

Bigjim , thanks for you participation and we enjoyed your talk and the show

Hey Joco, you are 100% right buddy and I agree that people have the right to comment...but piling on like a bunch of sheep makes no sense whether it is a fishing show...cooking show...whatever...negative gets negative is the point I am making and it always seems to come from anglers regardless where you are?????.

Well Ed,
If'n i wasn't still stuffed from ed's poultry pallooza it would have been empty when i gave it too him..then i'd have really needed my OHIP..
but such was not the case[burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp]...

About the SHOW.....
umm..i don't get out a lot livin in th'boonies like i do.

But the sparseness of the crowd gave me time to talk to everyone and
they had time to give me a few nano secs.

I had fun..yeh its $teep ...but like i said i don't get out much
so was willing to pay mega dough for the cabin fever remedy.
the Ed'sPP and Ottawa Show circuit

On the internet thing...Big Jim ...i think its both ways..
it hurts and it helps...
i 've seen things worked out via the net
and of course things blown into
unreasonable opinionated smithereens...

But in the end...cyber fishing sucks...
its reality that rocks..

went to that show a couple of years back, not as an angler, I was looking for a kayak. There were no kayaks. Shows at Lansdowne are now on my "no shopping" list. i.e. too expensive, not worth the expense. Even the "home" show, what a joke. Halifax had better home shows when I lived there.

I'll try not to harp on about the sportsman shows here... I have only been once in the past eight years or so after going every year since I was in my very early teens. And the only reason I don't go anymore is my lack of interest in all the non-fishing related displays and seminars. But after all, it is a boat, cottage, rv, hunting, fishing show all wrapped up into one.

I'm gonna have to give the Carp show a whirl this year, believe it or not I have never made a point to attend in the past

Jim, I'm of the same opinion as dana as far as the 'net is concerned. Can be a detriment or a blessing. The internet is a free-for-all of opinions, good or bad, and one must rely on his/her own ability to filter fact from opinion to make it a good source of information.

I agree but??

Post by Big Jim »

Hey Bucket, I agree with you 100%, what I am trying to bring out is the fact that it only seems to be anglers that pile on in a real negative pyed piper manner.
Maybe there are other non fishing sites where it is even worse that I/we don't know about, it is just that in my short time with Fish-Hawk I have seen it get a good bit more volotile so to speak and I feel it will just become another controversial nightmare instead of a fun place to be ...which is the reason I got here in the first place.

Thanks for the kind comments on the seminars guys!!!

Every one play safe on the ice...I get to go out this weekend...probably for gill's..no surprise.

It was also nice to meet loads of fellow Fish-Hawk dudes and their familys at the Ottawa Show.

Big J, i understand your worry, but this has been a relatively constructive thread...

you should have seen the fishing show threads on other boards....

this one was very tame......and constructive.

ps. big jim, my buddy lives near you, and i guess he does the animal/critter removal on your property? he called me very excited one night, saying he met Big Jim.....his name was Steve as well, we just call him wahoo. (he's native)....

great guy, great fisherman, and a perfect person to be doing your wildlife removal. :D

The trouble with the internet is that when people read a statement, their interpretation depends on the mood they're in. A casual conversational statement if spoken would just simply be part of an agreeable conversation, however, if put into print and read by someone who is either aggressive or defensive about the idea...well....we've all seen how far into the dumpster those strings go.
So, if a particular post gets you all fired up, sit back for a few minutes, take a deep breath and go back and read it again and try to see it from the position of the writer. They may just be making an observation.
Haven't seen a post yet that gets settled when everyone goes nuclear.

Hey Jim,

I joined another discussion forum on the internet that has nothing to do with fishing. You should see the flames, insults, threats and complaints about businesses on there, they even name names and say things that would be considered defamation (sp?). I haven't dared post anything on there yet. What we're seeing here is nothing.
