Going to St Clair Wednesday for the first time...advice?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Going to St Clair Wednesday for the first time...advice?

Post by steve-hamilton »

If anyone has any advice for a first time St Clair fisherman, i'd be greatly appreciative...

if you want to PM instead of posting public, that would be fine as well...

i 'believe' we are fishing outta Belle River. Thats about all i know....

I know most people troll....the rest we are going to discover as we go....

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Never fished St.Clair but here's what I know from talking with others

The lake is mostly lack of structure therefore trolling is the best option.
Baits in the 5.5 - 7 inch range are best, due to smaller forage. Fingerlings and woodies are popular baits.
Usually trolled high in the water column with multi line spreads
South wind is best

Maybe some seasoned St.Clair muskie nuts will offer some advice

Steve,

I've heard that the muskie fishermen on St. Clair will often short troll Believers, etc just behind the boat right in the prop wash. They're none to shy to hit them.

steve try the rivermouths and 8- 10 feet of water. the fish are on the shad fattening up. the thames rivermouth or detroit river mouyth. the hot colors are perch, dogs balls. try boat rods set at 25 feet of line at speeds of 3.5 to 2.7 mph.. the lake is weeded up and the waters are dirty now but may change in a day or 2. get a weather report as its fall and we have predominant north winds that can make the main lake pretty lumpy. the best bet is to try the thames or detroit river. . hope this helps, if ya need any more e-mail me i will try to answer any questions

Get yourself some Woodies in the colours that G Unis wrote down...you won't be sorry!!! You can get them in Belle River, I think the place is called D & R Tackle....Woodies have been the go too bait for a few years now on St. Clair.
