Pike, Muskie or ????

Here we go fellas

As questioned in my earlier quebec report this is the fish that i am looking for help on.

This fish was not observed closely when caught, I just assumed that it was another small pike as we has caught 5 or 6 of then this size in the hour prior to the photo. This pic was taken only because of the size of the fish as it was assumed it was another pike. Thought the pic would make a great B-day gift!!!!

The camp owner who has been on the lake for 24 years has never seen or heard of a muskie there.

Not looking to get roasted just looking for some help

Chain Pickeral, found in some northern NY state lakes... has there been any record of them in Que?

Joe,

Good looking little fish. I believe it's a perfectly normal young-of-the-year northern pike. The white bars will break up into spots as the fish matures. A more certain ID would require a mandibular pore count (<5 for pike) and a check of the extent of cheek scalation.

Thanks for sharing.

Here's a shot of some pike at an early age at which they're coloured even less like the adults.

In my mind.....definitely a pike.....as the fish grows those bars will separate a bit......

Topwater caught the smallest pike I'd ever seen at Constance Lake this winter.....looked exactly like that....no muskies in Constance Lake...

Im 99% sure thats a northern pike... it will take about a year for the pike to actually get its normail pike pattern that we normally see.

I've never seen a barred pike.

I've caught them this past winter smalLer than that, and they Looked Like an aduLt pike.CouLd it be that they are barred in different waters?

It still Looks hybrid to me :twisted:

Could be. My friend works for the MNR and knows just about everything abotu fish and fishing and he was just over and i showed him the pic.

those were his words.

Finally my books on fish and fishing come in handy! :D

I saw the picture and thought "Pike fry" (as in small fish. not oil and batter!) :wink:

I whipped out "Norther Pike and Muskie". Pages 13, 15, 16, and 17.

They have Pike fry around 6" long and are twins to the one Jale's dad is holding.

Forgot one more thing, it's not in my book, but I thought the markings for Muskie are dark markings on light background as opposed to Pike with light markings on a dark background? Anybody? Anybody? Bueller? Anybody?

If anyone is in the neighbourhood and has a scanner - you're more than welcome to grab the book and upload some comparison photos.
