Nice fish Campn...just a question...is that backpack always on or do you take it off to fish. Just thinking of casting with that thing on must make it a bit more challenging!
Fishing isn't a matter of life and death....
It's much more important.

If I'm downtown its always on me. Too many 'opportunists' around. I keep it light, only plastics, hooks, a few spinners and beer....er...water.....
You get used to casting with it on. I also use 4lb test, so the line really goes without too much effort.

Great fish man!
It was cool to meet you yesterday. No doubt I'll see you around.
Any luck at the island after you headed off?

No luck at Porter Island. They have an iron fence around the whole perimeter, no place to cast.
Looked like a great spot off the western point though. Need to go back in a canoe.
You get any hits on the popper?

That's a shame about the island but it would be a neat spot to check out in a canoe. Definitely. If I remember correctly there's plenty of open shoreline along the eastern shore of the river along that stretch though I've never tried my hand at it.
Did finally pull a couple of fish in on the popper, but had to wait for the sun to go down before I finally managed a hook set.

If you want to find more fish just get wet Much of the Rideau and the Ottawa (around town) is easily wadable.

Re: The rapids at Strathcona
For any of you guys fishing in that area you may want to check out Dutchy's hole. I'm told there are still some large toothy critters in there but it's too deep to wade. Back in the sixty's the fishing was great, due in part to the old Ottawa Beef slaughterhouse that was there.

Re: The rapids at Strathcona
After my fishing plans on Saturday fell through (*cough*..ROB..*cough*) I decided to head back to Strathcona and make the best of my morning.
Pulled this guy out right in front (behind?) the Russian embassy.

Re: The rapids at Strathcona
Dutchies hole is a park on the rideau river very close to strathcona park. If your looking on a new map it probably says robinson field, but its the same place. Porter island is actually private I believe since there is a retirement home there. The water is actually quite shallow , your better off to walk along edinburgh park and cast towards the island, have had MUCH luck in one particular spot along that stretch, you have to get wet though. Caught a mammoth in that area 2 years back pushing 5 pounds. That entire park is very good fishing up to the dog park area.
