Cisco run

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Cisco run

Post by Out4trout »

Anyone know if the Cisco have been running the rivers/creeks yet? I would think they could be a bit delayed this year... hope to give em a try later this week.

No but pike love them (or smelts) under the ice and golden shiners will cost you an arm and a leg.

In the summer they are deep, much like whitefish, but smaller and they have a terminal mouth. Nov-Dec they migrate up the creeks to spawn.
They are easiest to catch in the fall when they run. You can use small spinners in the fall, in the spring/summer they eat small worms and minnows etc. Some people also pull them through the ice, but I haven't figured them out in the wintertime. Here's a pic from this past April... note the adipose fin, forked tail and the terminal mouth. The plate is approx 12".

We cut out the guts and smoke them whole. I don't know if they are legal or not as bait.

They were declared endangered on Lake Simcoe and the season for cathing them has been closed indefinetly.

With that said they appear to be making a come back and reports of incidental catches of them have been increasing dramatically in the last few ice fishing seasons.

I caught one last year on a small spoon in 50ft of water at the base of a dropoff (promptly realeased).

For the past 3 or 4 years I've been selling frozen saltwater herring to the lake trout guys. Never had a complaint.....as they always come back for more. In my opinion they work just as well as ciscoes.......I don't think the trout or pike care....they just want to eat.
I'm a goin' fishin', mama's goin' fishin' and my baby's goin fishin' too.
