Bass Pro Shops

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Bass Pro Shops

Post by Fisher Dude »

How come we don't have a Bass Pro Shop in a major city like Ottawa? Ever been any discussion on this?

NOT ENOUGH BUSINESS... they have one down in Toronto, but look how close Toronto is to major US cities aswell... also, if they brought a huge Bass Pro Shops in, all of our Canadian Run Tackle Stores would almost be out of business... lets keep our dollar up here... im not trying to bash Bass Pro or nothin, it is a very useful place, but still... all the proceeds goto someone down in the States... I think its Johhny Morris or something... anyways... i support Canadian companies rather than the US economy... thats what i think anyways... im glad theres no BPS in ottawa because i am aware of the damage it would cost to our local businesses

Well in terms of sportsmen (i.e. hunting, fishing, etc) Ottawa is not a major market. Case in point, LeBaron moved to their new location in order to attract more east end customers. A store the size of BassPro would never survive in the Ottawa area. If we're lucky the Cabelas store will still be built in the Mirabell area as originally proposed.

One more year, Cabela's in Montreal. It is slated to be a huge mall like the one built around the Bass Pro in T.O.

Bass Pro Shops

No, Ottawa is not a major enough market to support a Bass Pro Shops. However, local retail shops like ourselves do carry Bass Pro Shop products and we would be happy to order in almost anything you see in their catalogue or online. Bait Casters may not be quite as much of a tourist attraction but it's sure cheaper than driving to Toronto from Ottawa!

Don't get me wrong. I would support Canadian content over others any day. I problem is I hate limited selection. Sure, you can hop on any Web site and order online; but I like to browse, pick-up stuff, look at it for quality (something you can't do online). Anyway, this is not a knock on any of our local Bait and Tackle shops. I know the service and helpfulness of the smaller places is superior - I just like the OPTION of going to one big honking place to check out ALL the toys, bells and whistles.

i agree with you on that one... i would love a huge place to check out all the new bells and whistles, but as everyone has stated... not a big enough market... oh well... Lebarons would be your closest bet for stuff like that...

Andy,

While you are in Auburn (BPS) do NOT go to Buffalo Wild Wings for lunch or dinner. It absolutely BITES. We went there last week, and were really disappointed. Sure there are plenty of TVs and sports clips all over, but the food is horrible. If you're just looking for beer and a place to hang out while your daughter mosies the stores, then it would be OK.

There is a Chilies right across the street that is halfway decent...and a few places within the mall, if it's just fast food you're after.

Have Fun!

BPS definitely brought a lot of revenue into the dying town of Auburn. Lots of new stores popping up and obviously more people coming & going. Thank goodness, as now Auburn can brag of something other than its imposing prison. (Creeps me out!)

BPS here in Harrisburg area has helped bring in other business. Some smaller shops may close but the proprieter can open a different business & make more income. A friend of mine manages Dick's Sporting Goods in this area. He has increased business due to BPS arriving & bringing more shoppers to the area, yet they are very similar competitors.

Fisher Dude

Check out Paddletales, Baitcasters and Bennets for selections. These stores have more unique selections of baits and equipment than the Bass Pro and the service is second to none. I was at the head office for Bass Pro in Flippin Ark. and the stuff they carried was not unique at all. Many of the things carried you could find at a good Canadian tire (rods and reels not included).

I have found more interesting stuff at Paddletales then Cabella's, Bass Pro and other Super stores combined.
The only thing that you are missing is the quantities of product but who cares. I don't want to see 300 of the same model rod anyway  .
Check them out.

Fisher Dude, I've been to BPS in TO twice and came away without several items that I really wanted. A lot of driving to be dissapointed.
If you want something from BPS give Crystal @ BaitCasters a call. I saw her post on this discussion & I sent her an e-mail asking about several items. She is ordering the stuff for me. No mess no fuss.
