Hey Walter .....Welcome to the board
....Bacons right...I fished the bay around the glenora Ferry up till the 8 of January...then the ice got to thick
....there was NO shortage of fish...the best time I found was before dawn till about 8 am ...depending on the weather (Sunny , Cloudy).. I'm talking big fish...i didn't have a real good grasp on how to fish them...as that was my first trip down there...this is going to be different..We have resident Pros on hand to point us in the right direction....Superdad...fished there for years...makes custom tackel that is made for Quinte...we Have ken , Ken has a place on the Bay and helped me put Eyes in the boat last year
, both these gentlemen have a wealth of information on the locations of the fish and how to catch them....then you throw in Big Jim...a professinal fishermen, editor in chief of a great fishing magazine and and man about town
you can't go wrong....Plus on this trip we have Eye Tracker , a pro staff member that is smart of a walleye fisherman than you''ll ever meet....with all this going for us ..not to mention the greatest bunch of Guys and Gals you'll ever fish with....all that spells..... A great time...new friends and big fish and big pile of GREAT MEMORIES

walleye trip

re-evaluate tried and true methods
Welcome Walter....(walleyec)walleyec wrote:The arrival of zebra mussels has created a need to re-evaluate tried and true methods of the past. Hopefully everyone will learn something new by the end of the weekend.

BINGO! "re-evaluate tried and true methods of the past" Planer Boards and the cover of night time fishing will make or brake a day on Quinte. I grew up in Trenton (Carrying Place) and use to fish the bay daily when the water was the colour of Tea. I have fished the same spots in the past couple of years at night with 200 to 300 ft of line out and caught some very nice walleye off of points and islands. Jig'n during the day is a waste of time...use to work when the water was stained...but not any more.
Over the years I have moved out to fishing Lake Ontario, North Channel and Glenora Ferry area for big suspended eyes. The big eyes are heading out to the lake pretty quickly after the spring run and the clear water has given them the advantage (They can see our boats and tackle) If you think of the walleye like trout...boat shy and spooky you will catch more fish.
Good luck and see you on the water.

Here's a short list that could prove helpful
- any LONG minnow style bait like Rapala husky jerks, smithwick rogues or Mann's stretch +20's. At that time of the year the fish are just starting to fatten up on Perch and other baitfish so the old saying "Match the hatch" applies here. I found Firetiger and Clown to work while Dr. Death in the Mann's was also working. You need to go big or stay home with these lures. 4 inch plus.
- riggers are a plus if you have them but not necessary as a lot of fish can be caught flatlining with the above baits which should get you down to 20 or so feet.
- a cheap alternative to the riggers are the Offshore snap weights which can be used in conjunction with the Offshore planer boards
- if you plan on running 2 rods per person, you may want to buy or borrow Offshore inline planer boards to take 2 lines away from the boat as the Walleye's can be spooked by the motor. I didn't use them last year but I heard people that were running them caught a lot more than I did. I just picked up a pair but haven't tried them out yet.
- if you have line counter reels that a plus. Make sure any reel you're bringing to have LOTS of line on.
Eyetracker or Superdad may have some other things to add to the list

Good points Ken.....we used all your tips last year and were realy excited ,when the first walleye was boated......reef runners also worked well, any body that has lead core, it will be a great advantage, I realy looking forward to this trip.... and any one who is sitting on the fence on this trip ....jump off and hop aboard the fish-hawk train to Quinte, you will be happy you did!!!!

Thanks for the info Ken!
I think.
Let's see... 3" Wally diver, 3" Suspending Rap, 3" Deep DivR...
Uh-oh. I see a pattern developing here.
I may go broke before the trip!
I almost missed the Quinte train, but Bacon threw his hand back from the caboose and hauled my primate butt on-board.
Due to injuries and really bad scheduling, I haven't been fishing much at all this year, so this trip is gonna feel a lot like opening day!
You'll all have to excuse me if I jump around like a giddy school girl and make odd squealing noises while I'm there.
Thanksgiving turkey, Bay of Quinte, a Rideau musky day trip all followed up by Hallowe'en candy to keep me buzzing 'til Christmas..
Thank you, October.
I just need a moment...

Just a couple of big cranks will work (Silver/Flash for sunny days , firetiger/fluorescent for overcast days)...the important part is having the bait at the right depth and speed.R.U. Ketchinenny wrote:Thanks for the info Ken!

I would go with the Wally Minnow...over the diver, it has better action when trolling. The Silver/Black, Perch and Clown work great on Quinte.
Another one that works great is spoons...but you need a way to get them down to the fish so they are often over looked by walleye anglers.
see ya' at quinte...

Hey Eyetracker, there is one thing that I haven't really heard of..........spoons for walleye....the good thing is that I have quite a few more of those than the big body baits. I was wondering what type of spoons you have success with............little cleos, cyclops, or salmon type spoons? I've got downriggers so getting them down is not a problem.
Thanks in advance.........Hoss
