Enough is Enough!
Re..
Musky can't be a very endangered species.. I took the skein out of a small pike that I caught and there must have been a couple of 2 foot lines of skein in there! I can just imagine how many eggs are in a full sized one. I know pike and musky are different species but they are related so I'm pretty sure musky carry just as many eggs. And this was a pike that was only 1lb.. never mind the huge breeding musky out there!

HawgWobbler, I sure hope you'll reconsider your choice about leaving this site. I enjoy and respect your input immensely.
I think that, as in past controversies, no one is going to hop over to the other side of the fence and be "converted". (Anyone fond of cormorants yet besides me?
)
I feel HW is, as Markus said, "passionate" about the muskellunge and therefore his posts regarding their protection and successful release seem extreme at times. That being said, I am in agreement with his views.
However, I also see Gordo's points about some of the lashing going on after someone posts a pic or a sensitive thread. Maybe the best way to go about airing stronger opinions or criticism would be to PRIVATE MESSAGE someone your views. Then that avoids the gang bang that seems to follow once someone takes the first bite. If you've got a big bone to pick, do it privately.
We are all entitled to our opinions, obviously, and certain issues definitely ignite controversy. However, we should all try to treat each other with respect.
HawgWobbler, I'll miss your valuable muskie expertise if you leave the site; and believe me, I'll be needing some help next year if I'm to top the whopping 26-incher I got this summer.

Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.
Glad to see someone step up to the plate and tells it like it is. What does Ontario do with the millions it collects from it's fishermen? Down here in Ohio they use the money to balance the budget. If just half of it was used to stock the lakes there would be fish for everyone to keep and eat or mount if they wanted to.
WELL SAID WOLFE....WELL SAID
I think we should all remember what brought us to this board, and to this comunity....the love of our sport, every person i have met from the comunity..has been excellent....we have broad base of fisher persons here......and from time to time there are bound to be clashes....hopfuly we don't take them personaly....and what they were ment to be...a opinion!!!!
Can't wait till the Spring....when we get into the Bass discussions

And this is where my frusteration comes from. Everything that I have posted to date is based on my opinion, and personal experiences. When I am stating facts, I will ALWAYS back up those facts with sources and examples.
Chris, to answer your questions and set the record straight so I'm not left being accused of posting mis-information.
1) Angler mis-handling
2) Size of the fish, i.e. long fight time
3) The frequent use of insufficient tackle
4) Water temperature (summer in particular)
5) Improper revival and release
etc, etc.
These variables are, in my opinion, far more significant when fishing for muskie than any other species, and hence the increased possibility of mortality.
Please take it in context. In respect to Ontario fisheries as a whole, when you compare muskie to bass or walleye, I would certainly classify them as endangered. My opinion.
Now that I have set the record straight, I can go fish in solace.

This is my opinion based on the following variables:Quote:
...and the fact that they are far more suseptible to death after being caught than any other fresh water species.
Just wondering where you got this info from?
1) Angler mis-handling
2) Size of the fish, i.e. long fight time
3) The frequent use of insufficient tackle
4) Water temperature (summer in particular)

I was a part of it, and I don't feel it gives an adequate representation of the population. Putting 30 experience muskie anglers on the water for 1 day and keeping logs of fish caught and angler hours does not come close to giving an adequate representation of the muskie population in the Ottawa River. The best your getting is an "educated guess", if that. Again, just my opinion, and hence why I used the words "efficient population survey".Quote:
When was the last time the MNR did an efficient population survey on the Ottawa River, Rideau, Madawaska, etc?? It just doesn't happen.
It actually just happened on the Ottawa River.....the same day of the MCI outing on Oct 16th.
You're right, and I wasn't implying that it was. Were it endangered, none of us would be fishing for them. The muskellunge is NOT an endangered species.

Now that I have set the record straight, I can go fish in solace.
