does lure colour attract fish or fishermen?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Markus, you've hit on the reason for this reaction by reversing the color pattern. Mother Nature provides camoflage for all her creatures to offer a natural blending to the enviroment. Light colored bottom colors to blend with the sky looking up and darker tops to suit the reverse. She has many ways to enhance the camoflage by contributing bar effects and other body colorations to suit the species. Consider too that as you move up the food chain this camo effect is reduced and that is to alert the quarry to predators in the area.

Wolfe, most fish use their eyes to feed up and straight ahead. There is limited downward vision in most specie. Regardless of what fish you catch next, take a close look at how the eyes are positioned.

That would explain why I sometimes seem to have better luck with an orange stripe on the belly. Predator looking up would see a perch. Interesting.

One of my favorite crank bait colors is a white body/orange belly, especially trolling for suspended fish.

colours

Post by bass ackwards »

It wasn't me who come up with the dark top, light bottom, I heard it for George Cochren at a Bass U seminar, when asked why he used this colour scheme, he simply replied "because it catches fish" (and he has won a few bucks). That was the answer for most of his questions though. I'm going to try it with spinnerbait skirts this year on the Ottawa Vallay South bass tour, I'll keep you posted on the results.

This is one of the first posts on here but I always wondered this as well. Especially since you start to lose colours as you decend into the depths. So does colour really matter when fishing certain fish??

I believe for the most part the 'fancy' colours are great for
catching the 'Angler' more than the 'target'!! (the fish)

I tend to fish mainly for Walleye and I understand (from Sheldon  )that they feed 'upwards', so if they're only seeing the bottom of the lure what difference does it make what colour's on top??? :? :?

So my belief is that it's a marketing strategy from the tackle companies to keep their products flying off the shelves. Seriously, who needs Reef Runners in 40 different colours!!??

Although I must admit my collection continues to grow at an alarming rate!!!!! :P :P

Interesting Topic.....

Can't offer up much of an opinion regarding crank baits etc, since most of my spin fishing is done in a river where cranking against a swift current does nothing but provide a good workout.

However, when I'm really using real angling skill (lol 8) by fly fishing, colour selection is key, albeit size, depth of drift/drown plays a signficant role. Matching the hatch and any other forage has made even the most finicky of fish take. However, in situations when I didn't have the exact BWO or cacidotea or mayfly hatching in the creek with me in my vest, intuition and colour selection has produced consistant strikes and catches. Other factors like reading water, accuracy of cast, presentation, experience and persistance help a lot.

Colour is important for several reasons:
1)match the hatch
2)match the water( if the water is stained or opaque...colour is huge)
3)depth
4)match the light conditions-I've been having a lot of luck with looking at the light and matching the lure to colour of light
