Hand Augers

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Hand Augers

I was wondering how difficult it is to drill holes with an 8inch hand auger.

As long as the blades are sharp, no problem :!: I do it all the time :!: And right now, we're talking 30+ inches of ice

I have a Fin Bore III in an 8" and it cuts like great in all ice. it does get tiring when the ice reaches 12" or more.

I have a Swede-Bore 8" Ice auger. Up to 18" I cut through the ice like a hot knife through butter. When you start to hit 24 + inches of ice like it is now in the Ottawa Valley....you slow down awfull quick and the pecs start to burn after a couple holes

I used my new Finn Bore III 6" for the first time and I have to say we were drilling though 2 ft of ice in about 30 seconds no problems.

I have to admit I could not believe it would cut this fast, i'm sure the 8 inch
won't be much slower.

For my fisrt time ever icefishing and I had a blast.Ausome auger. :D :D

My Finn Bore with dull blades will drill thru 42-48 inches of frozen mud in about 25-35 minutes. I often find sitting on the handle and/or wedging it between my legs so that I can sit on the auger while I squat and move myself in clockwise circles, is an effective way to really work my glutes, lower back, quads and sweat glands, while tearing thru that ice at about an inch and a half a minute. There is nothing like the reward of finally drilling thru the ice after you're totally dehydrated from pain, sweat, and tears. It's actually such a great feeling one does not even want to bother fishing after it's done, but alas, we get to fish two lines so I know I force myself to enjoy drilling that second hole, and then, I sit around in my dripping wet sweaty clothes and let the cold air begin to turn me a harder cold than the ice I just got thru.

Hand augers suck. All of them. You're fooling yourself.

Wow MB, I am depressed now, feeling very inadequate with my 7" hand auger. I think I go kill myself now, just can't face that kind of abuse anymore.
Seriously, good one,

Not tough at all....just remember to save the ice cubes that form from your sweat after the paramedics revive you. The salt in them add a nice touch to bloody caesars.
