Look out boys! You better start raising Cain with your Councilman or whatever you have to govern locally. When I lived on a Lake in the St. Louis, MO area some wacko resident didn't like the idea of a camper parked in someone's driveway. The person was asked to move it and was shown a by-law that was rarely enforced. It stated that all trailers, boats, campers, etc... could not be parked more than three consecutive days in the front yard. The guy with the camper was hot and pressed the councilman to enforce the by-law for all vehicles mentioned above and it's been miserable for all residents since. C'mon you live on a lake and can't even have a trailer or boat neatly parked in your car port...
Watch out and don't take it lying down!

By Laws

Just because you own the land doesn't mean you can do what you like with it. I'm willing to bet that the new and more agressive version of this by law was spawned by some Sanford and Son meathead who felt the need to park the SS Minnow (After wreck) in the driveway and had his cousins and their cats living in it to boot.
Maybe a word with the local member of council could shed a little light on it.

I find this a bit naive as well as ignorant. Just because you own property does not give you the right to do with it as you wish. I own a boat as well, and have to keep it in storage year round due to by-laws within my community as I dont have a garage. I dont like to pay the fees to store it, but on the other hand I'm glad such regulations are in place to keep my property value going up, or at least preserve it. And I'm certainly not a granola cruncher, in fact, far from it.RJ wrote:scttsmpsn,

I realize that it is inconvienent and can be expensive to deal with, but these rules/regulations are in place to ultimately protect all homeowners and preserve the property's value. If you were a homeowner which didn't own a boat I'm sure you would be singing a different tune.

I'd like to see the city try to enforce that law in Constance Bay, almost every home has at least one boat/snowmobile/atv/ice shack sitting in thier driveway or on thier lawn.
Whats next, you will be subject to a fine if your car or truck gets rusty or your curtains are not in the right color scheme. Give me a break...!!!

I will never understand how a guy who stores his boat in his laneway next door to me would affect my properties value....can I claim that when they reassess my taxes next year...."but Johnny next door has a boat in his laneway....please drop it down accordingly"....
I'd love someone to call Gordo's 17 foot brand new Lund an eyesore....

Folks,
I have had By-Law come to my door because one of my neighbors didn't like my boat being in the driveway. I can understand them not liking it, but in fact my boat is a lot nicer than most of the cars on my block.
When the by law officer told me he was giving me a warning because of the "Nepean" by law I quickly corrected him and told him that we live in the city of Ottawa not Nepean. I also proved it with the jacket he was wearing and the ticket (which all said city of Ottawa). The final kicker is I pay my taxes to the city of Ottawa which by the way currently doesn't have a law about leaving "recreational vehicles" in your driveway (The by-law officer said this not me).
The worse part about this I was planning on moving the boat into my garage a few days later (before by-law came by), but he gave me until December 15th and I pretty much waited until the 15th before I put it away. Yes that is being a bit of an A**hole, but if whoever called by-law would simply asked me to do something with it I would have been happy to explain that I was still fishing into December and the boat would be away by the end of the first weekend.
Now I can't expect everyone to do what I would do (I would say something to my neighbor if I was that bothered by it) and I understand that they call by-law in order to avoid me potentially freaking out at them but when I spend over 20K for a boat that sits in my driveway because I use it (a lot) I should have the right to do so, especially if there is no real by-law in place.
If they are planning to have such a by-law in Ottawa I will call my local councilperson and complain (it most likely won't do any good, but at least I will let them know what my feelings are that this will in fact affect me, which will affect how I vote next election)
I wonder if I made a boat out of cardboard boxes and left it in my driveway would they give me a fine?
