Shore fishin at Black Rapids

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Basstalker,

Hooray for you and your friend both landing your 1st muskies. I'll bet it was (still is) a rush. You chalked up some points for our team, too. 8)

Thx to Hawg Wobbler for his advice re: holding / weighing these impressive fish. You all know my stance on handling fish aimed for successful release.

Hope I can find that (TIGER) musky this year. My brother got a small one on our local lake this week while we were fishing together. Small or not, I wanted one!! Waaa-waaa!

W.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.

Way to go guys! :)

I love to see it happening.

I remember long before Fish-Hawk.Net my father-in-law, Joe, telling me about some guy who caught a muskie in the Jock River. I had to go immediately and chase the dream. I never really believed it could happen to me.

And it didn't...

...at least not in the Jock.

But it did on the Rideau on the last Saturday of October that year.

An estimated 33 incher of about 100 pounds at least I thought.

It was life-altering.
:)

So Hawg Wobbler, tell us about your first muskie or another memorable one. How much trying did it take you to catch your first?

I didn't know.

I am guilty as charged, I even have the picture to prove it....

I was holding the muskie verticaly, I swear officer I didn't know.

I am a catch and release and I do my very best not to harm the fish, any fish as much as possible but to think I caught a beauty muskie and may have fataly handled her is very disheartening to me.

Fortunately with my second muskie (first and only this year that I actually landed) I was craddling her for the picture and didn't hold her vertically, she was 31" caught in my canoe while trolling with a spinner bait.

Any tips on how to properly hold by the gill plate? I can hold walleye no problem but a big muskie or pike would be a first for me so I would like to know please.

Mr. J,

I just posted a thread on how to properly handle and release muskie/pike. It's really hard to describe how to handle the fish by the gill plate in words. I'm going to try to find a picture somewhere, or next time I catch one, I will take close up shots of the hold so you get a good idea.

Fishhawk,

I've had many memorable muskie experiences. I'd have to say the most memorable ones are the ones that got away though. Those monster fish that get within 2 ft. of the boat only to spit your bait out at you are what keep me coming back for more. :)

My first muskie was caught on the Ottawa river on my fourth outing for muskies. I had just gone out and purchased a pile of gear, and had read a ton of literature on the web. My first outing was frusterating. 6 hours on the water, and not a fish to be seen. Not to mention the swelling of my forearms from using all this heavy tackle. :) Second and third outings were the same.

On my fourth outing, I was out on the Ottawa river at about 8pm on one of those nights where it looks like you could step out of your boat, and skate across the water. Dead calm. I was throwing an oversized spinnerbait over some coontails, when WHAM! I thought at first I'd hooked into a big pike, but when the fish surfaced boatside, I knew this wasn't a pike. Turned out to be a nice 37" muskie. When you see your first muskie, they definitely look bigger than that though. :) I don't have the picture of this fish with me right now, but will post later. Here is my second muskie, a 42", that I caught the next day though. :)

Yes it was your post that I had read that "showed" me my improper handling.

I would very much like to learn the proper technique for holding by the gill plate and look forward to your "lesson"

You should, and everyone else should, continue to educate. Any serious fisherman of both gendres would always welcome learning something new.

Guess where this beauty came from? Yup the Jock. All 31 inches and a successful release for another day. Caught her trolling with a spinner I made and it was teh first time I tried this specific spinner too.
