My advice to myself now is to call up Kingman and have the kids fish with other kids. My son needs the introduction to how much fun it can really be and I think it will take seeing another kid with a sun fish.
I tried to have him pick out a small lure he could call his own, but he keeps going for the monster muskie lures. I bought one he picked out but to be truthful even I am nervous about actualy catching something that would take this lure, it's huge.
I took him once to long island locks and also to black's rapids, good idea but not for fishing, too many boats for him to get distracted over.
Tips for fishing with kids

have the kids "pack" their own "lunch, snack"
bring some kiddy dry cereal ie coco puffs,
an egg timer, juice etc
have the kids flip a coin to see who nets the first fish
( no matter how small) everything is an adventure
pick a "honey hole" crank timer for 15 min
when it rings have the kids pick the nest honey hole
3 hrs latter your ready to go in but the kids
want to keep going just to hear the timer
ring and to pick the next spot
we have been doing this for 8 years now
the oldest is 12 and we still bring the timer
and we have never fished less then 3 hrs
EVER even with a 4 yr old
love every min of it
loads of pictures of "the big kahona"
make it as fun as you can letting the kids
make a few call and your day will never end
even the dog likes the kids in the boat
take the kids as often as they want to go
never force them and they'll be
your partners for a long time
still fishin with the kids
