Need a mentor

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Need a mentor

Post by alottawa »

Hi all,

I would like to fish in Ottawa and its surrounding area and need some practical guidance.

I am not experienced. I never fished here in Canada. Well I just arrived here two month ago. Last year I fished 2 or 3 times in Europe and felt in love with fishing. Now, I want to learn it in Canada.

I have obtained a non-resident license and got also some rods and lures and a mechanical machine to cut the ice...

Can someone tell me how I could get started with fishing?
Are there some clubs or schools where I could get training?

Is there someone which would allow me to accompany him one or two times when he is going fishing?

Thanx in advance,
Ali

I suggest you go to one of your local shops, not walmart or canadian tire, but a shop such as paddletales, and have one of the employee's set you up. they'll be able to give you practical advice to get you started.

not to mention, spots with many shore anglers will give opportunity for you to ask questions "on the water".

have fun. :D

Join a fish and game club. There are many in the area and they'll be able to provide advice and set you up with others to fish.

Also, there are periodic posts on here for shore groups in the softwater season.

I hate to sound negative but it takes more than 1 post on here before folk are willing to take you out and show you spots etc.

Hope to see you on the water!

Welcome to Fish-Hawk

I'm sure you'll get lots of help for the Ottawa area.

If you'd like some help on some of the surrounding areas south to the St. Lawrence send me a PM.

Hmmmmmmm  ...Ali seems to have 2 replies already to take him out after his 1 post  :D

He's not asking for you to take him to your "hotspots"....he's an angler that is new to Canada (Ottawa) and would like some practical guidance....

I'm pretty sure Jamsers, that you would feel like a fish out of water too if you were transferred to another country and wanted to get out fishing in the area you just re-located to..... 8)

Good on you DropShot'r

Not sure, but after your first reply, it sounds like you were being the spokesperson representing the 4000 members

Not at all man,

But I think it is safe to say that usually takes a few posts, get known a bit and then the invites start coming in...fair assumption is it not?

Ali, what do you want to fish for? Almost every species in the ottawa area can be caught effectively from shore. Are you in the east or west end?
Are you a catch and release kinda guy or do you wish to eat your quarry?

If your ever up in the Carleton Place/Perth area me and Canmoore will gladly take you spring walleye fishing from a couple of clean lakes.
