Bass Report (4-5 pound smallie) You tell me

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Bass Report (4-5 pound smallie) You tell me

Post by bl8ant »

Hello all, I have been lurking a while and finally I am contributing. My girlfriend and I hit my favorite lake just outside of Ottawa for some bass fishing from the canoe.

Hot day, bright sun and 5-10km/h winds.

Most of the better largemouth seemed to be sitting in 5-8 foot deep weed beds not far from pad fields. They were caught on weightless texas rigged soft jerk baits. A few were caught in the pads as well.

The smallmouths were caught in 8-15 foot depth—most off of points and breaklines using 1/8th-1/4 oz jig heads and powerbait grubs/craws/etc.

I was in a canoe and didn't have a scale or tape measure but this first smallmouth was extremely long (what would you guys guess it weighs?). Take a look at my fingers for an idea of the fish's length. Well over 20 inches.

Thanks Stajan_14. I thought it was easily four as well and possibly close to the "nickle" mark that I have seen on here. I have caught fatter ones but never one this long.

I know it is tough to judge from photos but I know there are some experienced eyes here (moderators?).

Nice fish!. Your girlfriend takes a mean photo. I would'nt trust the moderators around here to give you an idea of how heavy those fish are though... They may be a little jealous ya know

Thanks guys, there are a few largemouths in those pics, two pics of one fish. I would have guessed the biggest at 2.5 lbs. Thought the big smallmouth was over 3 without doubt measured 21-22 inches (I put him up to the but of my spinning rod and tyried marking it from there).

Anyway it was a blast catching 'em. There were lots of others caught that day and I have pics of 'em all. These ones just turned out the best :)

What dan said.

Smallies are deceptive.

Get a scale then you will know for sure.

GREAT mix of bass you got there.!!

those smallies are the best when they jump 6 feet in the air! nothing beats that ..........

I am going back this Saturday—taking my mother out for the day in the canoe to get her in to some bass.

I will pick up a digital scale and post the report again.
