What's your Musky Tactics???

I learned how to fish for Muskies from my Brothers. We always throw a big crank bait in the wash of the prop about 15-20ft behind the boat and drag it right through the weeds at a relitively higher speed than you would normally when trolling. This tactic has always proved itself well as some nights we would hook into 3-5 Muskies.

I'm curious as to what other tactics guys might use I understand you may not want to share them but figured I would ask and see what happens...

No one is asking for honey holes or anything of the sort...

I do a combination of things. I like casting top water baits, if there is a slight chop over weeds and along weedlines, and sometimes out over deeper water next to structure. When I get tired of that I troll spinners along the weedlines and contours. I'll vary the speed I'm going at, will zig zag a bit. Any weeds by drop-offs or structure seem to work, fallen logs by deeper water...

I've had a lot of luck casting, this time of year I find if you can cast weeds in 2-5 FOW water, you could have some luck, that's where I've been seeing them.

I like top raiders and spinners as my most used.

I don`t think it isn`t that people are too cool as you put it.

Muskies are not the easiest to catch. I have no issues sharing tactics.
So long as the people I am sharing them with know how to safely handle and release musky and they have the requisite tools. Like a big net or cradle, long needle nose pliers, and bolt cutters.

So before you go off insulting people, I`d suggest you find out the reasons behind why they are not sharing. Yes, some are probably as you say `too cool, or too proud`. If you`ll notice I suggested the poster in this case go to a Muskies Canada meeting.

There he`ll learn techniques, areas, guys to fish with and proper handling techniques.

I for one (and am sure I am not alone) would hate to be the one to assist someone in catching one only for it to die because they didn`t have the capacity to know what to do with one when they had it.

I realize the person posting may know this, but others might not. This is an open forum where anybody can read it and try it.

It wouldn`t be the first time some whizz with a bass rod goes out after muskies!

And that was NOT a shot at bass fishermen!

Guys, I appreciate both sides of your views... I'm not asking for honey holes. Just wondering what lures and or techniques you may find more productive.

MuskieWannabe thanks for your input, what aboout those big spinners with the rooster tails? I was thinking of trying those out? When I think of the Muskies I've caught in the past pretty much all of them were always in less than 8 FOW. I've aways used the techniques mentioned above but so far this hasn't produced any fish as of yet . And come to think of it I think it was more the Fall when my brothers and I would go for them.

Jamsers, I completely agree that handling a Musky requires special gear. Perhaps there should be a thread on how to correctly do this? Personally I don't even take them out of the water unless it's going to be for a very quick photoshot and I would never even consider keeping one, to me they are strictly a sport fish.

Your not doing anything wrong, early in the year can be a tough go. Fish are in transition, moving alot, weedbeds have not yet established themselves. If this is the case, as it is this year, coverin water ie. trolling may be most effective.

There is no magic bait or technique. Just magic places. Find a good location, with a good presentation, and a hungry fish will eat.

Wow Tricky...I really don't think any of my tactics could help you...the fact that some nights you and your brothers have been able to hook into 3 - 5 Muskies during an evening outing is remarkable....I'm sure other members haven't had the pleasure of experiencing that including me

whatever you're doing....just keep doin it!!
