Have this motor on a 17.5 ft. fish & ski.When I hammer the throttle to pull up a skier the motor hesitates for a second then sputters for a second and then takes off. Makes it hard to pull up beginner skiers! Anyone else ever experience this with a merc or other outboard? Could use a good mechanic as well. Does Mike Microp.... work on bigger outboards? Thanks in advance for all your informative replies.

Yes, I have had the same problem. I have a 1993 Merc/135hp and it did happen to me pulling a skier. I know that there is a good mechanic at GG Lalonde I have brought my boat there for a few years now and he's very good and will actualy take the time to listen to what you say.

This may or may not be an issue; I always buy gas at the "Super" grade, meaning don't put regular gas use only Super. I find that you get alot more "kick" when you put the hammer down. Now obviously there could be a number of other reasons but I think you should look at what you have done maintenance wise recently and backtrack or better yet what ahve you not done maintenance in a while. Could be the fuel filter, ect.

Thanks for the info. I spoke to a man that worked at Ricks Marine about the problem. He said this motor is a 2 2 design. It runs on 2 cylinders up to about 1800 rpm and then hits a transition zone while the other two kick in. This was supposed to be a fuel saving measure. This would explain the hesitation and sputtering that I'm getting between 1800 & 3000 rpm. A bit annoying.

Not a problem. Rick's Marine actually did some work on my motor also when I hit a rock on Mississippi Lake. I found Rick's Marine to be very good also and honest!
