My motor after trolling for a while the first time out this year started to make a loud buzzing sound. Not the motor itself, but a warning buzzer located under the console. The motor is oil injected... is it that this isn't working that set the alarm off? Is there a way to know if the oil injection is working? Any other ideas?

In your owners book it should tell you what the different alarms are. My father-in-laws Evinrude it was a steady alarm that meant the oil pump wasn't working.

My old 60 Merc used to do this when trolling. It's doubtfull it's your oil, normally the pumps are set high for idle and you can smell them from a 100yds away. My problem was a worn impeller, it pumped enough water for general use but couldn't handle the idle rate. New impeller, never heard it again.

I too would put money on the impeller being bad. They aren't hard to replace and don't cost a huge amount. The last problem you need is a cooling system problem that cooks the motor.
They should be replaced periodically. Different people and motors have different opinions but it depends on how much it's used and also just sitting there the impeller will stay in the bent position. It wouldn't be wrong to change them at least every 2-3 years...larry

I was going to start a new thread and until I saw this one going and realized that I was about to ask the exact same question.
My 1998 25hp Johnson was making a loud warning shriek when I was trolling yesterday, and it wouldn't stop. I turned the motor off, and noticed it was smokin hot. I let it cool down, and I could go full-out around the lake without issue, but when it went to idle, or a troll speed, the alarm came back on ringing.
I had a feeling it might be the impeller or the waterpump....I'm going to change the impeller first......

I think the impeller is the water pump - is it not???

The impeller is just a small circular device with fins that spins and sucks water into the engine for cooling....
