Dirt in the gas tank

I was transferring gas from one of my tanks to the other yesterday and noticed a small amount of dirt when the tank was finally empty 
. I had some motor troubles(stalling) last week at Quinte and wondered if this maybe was the problem.
When at Quinte I later switched tanks and the motor seemed to run better.
Any thoughts as I'm no mechanical expert.Others have suggested it might have been water in the gas.
