Provincial Sales Tax
Provincial Sales Tax
I bought and registered my second hand boat in June 2008. This week I finally received a bill from the Ontario Government telling me I owed them 8% sales tax...

Although I'm in no way no fan of McGuinty I'm getting sick of this BS blaming McGuinty for this crap. The same thing happened to me years ago under Harris. This is a institutional problem that has been happening for many years. Although I can't be sure, I would not be shocked if it also happened when the NDP was in power.Daner wrote:WoW Steve.
Looks like McGuinty's Finance is on the ball!

Don't blame one party for this, when I know for a fact at least 2 parties have been in power this has happened and possibly a 3rd party.
I agree. I'm sure the problem stems from the communication between federal and provincial agencies. The feds tell the provinces that the boat was registered. Then the province collects the tax. Who knows how long it took for the feds to act.Woodsman wrote:Although I'm in no way no fan of McGuinty I'm getting sick of this BS blaming McGuinty for this crap. I always thought they charged the tax when you changed the registration.
How did they know what you paid.
I was thinking of buying a bigger boat (used private sale) and asking for a bill for a lesser amount I wouldalso expect to be asked for a lesser bill when I sell my boat.

I love golf it keeps thousands of unworthy off the water
When I registered the boat though Customs (the agency in charge of this at the time) I paid federal taxes.horsehunter wrote:I always thought they charged the tax when you changed the registration.
I paid provincial taxes (for boat & trailer) when I changed the registration of the trailer but still got a request for the taxes about 2 years later. Luckily I still had the receipt or they would have demanded the taxes be paid again.
When they get the info from the feds you bought a boat they do not cross reference back to the MTO to see if you paid already. Keep your receipt
Now instead of registering a boat through the feds you have the option to license it though the province at a Service Ontario Center.
