I'm also interested in learning what to do or where to buy a seal for my 1985 Johnson 15hp. The engine cover seal is peeling...

Alot of times people think their 9.9-15 is leaking gear lube but it turns out it is not. How do you know it's gear lube?

I have rebuilt a 1975 Merc 7.5 HP, lower unit so here is my 5 cents worth ... You will require special tooling to dismantle the lower end unit. You can obtain the seals from a Merc. dealer and bearings from GBS .. "General Bearing Service" in Ottawa; However you will need the tooling required to remove and install the retaining ring that holds the prop shaft bearing / seal carrier in place. You can't get this at C.T. Also if the prop. shaft seal of an older engine is leaking, replacing the seal maybe a temporary fix. The oil seal will actually wear a ridge / groove in the prop. shaft overtime ?? Metalurgy and enviroment dependant. And unless the prop. shaft is replaced or repaired (hard chromed and re-ground to size), The replacement seal can and will be worn out at an accelerated rate. Point being you will need to inspect the prop. shaft and bearing play once you are down there and decide what needs attention and or replacement. I have a scanned copy of the schematic of a Merc. lower end but can't figure out how to post the image .... go figure!! PM me with your e-mail addy and I will forward to you for reference.

Cheers
