Hey Joco...I've been running an Ariens 8HP 24" snowblower since 1977. All I've ever put in it is Castrol 5W30. That's also what I put in my sit-on lawn mower, and my Honda hand mower. I've never had any problems related to this oil.....cheers.....fishtraks.
Hi Joco - I have been using Pennzoil 5W30 in my Toro for several years now with no problem. I don't think the brand makes much difference but 5W30 is the important part.
I too use 5w30 but it's pure synthetic from penzoil. It's all I have ever run in it. I became a beleiver after one winter 15 years ago. I found the engine turned over very slowly in the deep of winter @ -25 degrees. I always used the electric start. I had heard of the benefits of using synthetic oil. The main benefit being easier starting in severe cold and the resulting faster lubrication because the oil flows easier.
Regular oil is much thicker at those cold temperatures.
After installing the synthetic oil I start the snowblower without the electric start very easily first time, everytime.
