I am in the process of buying a newer bass boat. I am looking at G3 boats and they offer yamaha motors in there packages. I was woundering if there is much differance between the 4 stroke and there HPDI series when it comes to fuel economy. Also I was woundering in general the same question between EFI and 4 stroke motors?
Thanks
Justin
Yamaha 4stroke vs HPDI 200hp
Hi Justin. If you are going to be doing more trolling or running at low to mid throttle go with the F200 four stroke. The fuel savings will be better. Now if you plan to make long runs at mid to high throttle the HPDI will be better on fuel.
A bass boat with a four stroke may be harder to re sale since it is a 2 stroke dominated market.
Which ever one you chose they are both great engines and will give you years of great use.

The fuel savings will be minimal when you consider the extra cost of the 4 stroke ie oil and filter changes/valve adjustments and if you put alot of hours on the 4 stroke more oil changes. Also with some other manufacturers there DI fuel figures are better than Yamaha.
The emissions from a 4 stroke are more noxious than a 2 stroke.
I am considering a 200hp ETEC in the 60 degree block as I have been waiting for them to do that. I have a 2001 Fitch which was supposed to be a lemon, I geuss it depends who works on it. I had one issue with a TPS and it has run flawlessly for 3 years and it was purchased as a used motor. It's based on the 90 degree block so it is heavier thaqn the eaghle series blocks and that is what the new 200 is based on so it is quite a bit lighter and that is what I want.
A fuel injected motor will just cost you too much in gas but if it was a choice between that and a 4 stroke then I would probably pick the 4 stroke only because you could travel further on a tank of gas.
Considering the boat is a G3 and being aluminum you want as light a motor as possible thus the 2 stroke and most likely direct injection.
