NY Fishing
Just seeing if anyone else is heading down to NY this weekend to do some fishing? I'll probably be down around Lake Placid fishing the West Branch and Saranac most likely.

Well we managed to get down to spend Sunday and Monday fishing. I'll post the pics once I've managed to get them uploaded.
We drove down Sunday morning and got into Lake Placid in time for lunch, a side trip to Jone's Outfitters and a little shopping before checking into the hotel. That evening it was off to one of our favorite sections of river that has always produced fish for us. We're not there 10 minutes and my wife hooks into a nice 13" rainbow, on a big #4 black stonefly nymph.
After that things pretty much died down, with only one rise seen all evening. Moving to one of the upper pools I managed to coax a nice 13" brown to the surface with a juicy foam stonefly. All in all I'd say we did pretty well considering the mountain bikers that decided to take a dip while we were fishing, as well as the other 6 anglers on the same stretch of water.
The next morning we tried one of the flats section. While there were a few rises, it was next to impossible to get a fly into the locations of the rises, given the close brush and muddy banks. So the morning was pretty much a bust.
The afternoon was spent in town taking advantage of some of the sales before heading back North. Next on the list was a stop on the Salmon River. The water levels are down somewhat but it is still fishable.
We started off on a nice riffle run, which looked like a good spot to nymph. On my first cast I see the flash of the trout but miss the hook set. On my second cast, the fish goes for my indicator. At this point it's off with the nymph and on with something significantly meatier. first cast, bang trout on, a nice brown. I think we managed six trout out of that run alone.
Overall we managed to land a dozen trout (browns/bows) in just over two hours, and lose another six. You can bet that we'll be back for some more trout fun before the season ends.

Todd,
Your report on the relative success that you and your wife experienced between the Au Sable and the Malone Salmon conforms completely to the sum total of my own.
I am eager to get back down there soon, and you might have influenced me to not bother with the additional drive to Lake Placid.
My one other contribution right now stems from a response to my question in a recent thread about why people do not go down to these Adirondack rivers more often. One fellow stated it was because people could not get away during the week. I confess that I take advantage of my own ability to go down mid-week as much as I can, and that I try to move work into Saturday if that will let me do so.
From my experience, however, I would not be so concerned about crowds on the Malone Salmon or the Chateaugay on a weekend that I would not go down then. There might be something akin to a crowd on some weekends in the spring. There are also a couple of locations that get pounded and where you often find others fishing. However, especially on the Salmon, I have always been able to find enough unoccupied water to appease my own anti-social tendencies.
It was nice to read your report and I look forward to the photos.
Did you -- or anyone else -- see any white flies around Malone?

The Salmon River last week was on fire. Didn't seem to matter what flies we used and we were catching trout all day. The salmon River today was super slow and only turned on for about a half hour in the evening. Quite a change in only one week. The water has dropped and temperatures are higher.
Nope, no white flies yet.
