My trip to the Beaverkill

Post by ganman »

Perhaps the most famous trout stream in the world is the Beaverkill in NY's Catskill Mountains. We went there this weekend. I was going to stay in the Adirondacks but with all the rain those streams were blown out. The forcast looked a little better downstate and stream conditions were better.

After some intermittant rain on the trip down, things cleared up once there. I got some fishing in for a few hours before we had dinner that evening at place called the Riverside Cafe which was kinda neat. It has a glassed in dining area that sits out over the river.

Sunday morning was cold with rain threatening. Since the best fishing is in the afternoon/evening we went out for breakfast and did some shopping. By noon the wind picked up and the rain came down so we went to the Catskill Fly Fishing Museum nearby. We waited out the weather hoping it would get better but it only got worse (hail). So we pulled the plug hoping maybe to find some favourable conditions on the way home but no such luck.

So other than a few browns I caught on the Beaverkill Saturday afternoon the weekend was a bust fishing wise. It was great to see the museum though. If you ever get a chance to get down there do so. The Beaverkill and it's tributary the Willowemoc are picture perfect streams set in lush, steep green valleys. Nearby are the Delaware Rivers which have big trout and stay cold all summer.

Sorry no pics. On Saturday I thought, oh what the hell I'll get some pics Sunday. All the trout I caught came on a sz. 12 Hare's Ear nymph and from pockets in riffles.
