Heading up to Blakeney Saturday

Post by Todd B. »

I will be heading up to Blakeney (with my partner in crime) for an afternoon of quality fishing this Saturday. If anyone wants to join, just give me a shout and we can work out details.

Cheers,

I'll be getting ready for a 2 day fishing trip to Quebec on Sunday but I'm only a few minutes away so I could come down for awhile. When do you plan on getting there? Or you could give me a call when you are on your way. I'll PM you my phone number.

Bob,

I'm guessing we'll be there between 1-2pm. I have a few things I have to take care of in the morning that might delay me. I have your number so I can give you a call either way.

Cheers,

Paul,

The weather was great but the bite was off somewhat. We managed a couple 10-12" SM but the majority were in the 8" range. In addition to the SM we had a nice 13" fallfish, and a couple of small eyes (a good sign for things this fall). As Bob mentioned while we there...the back channel is a great stretch of water, though it's not someplace you fish on your own. With all the scrambling you have to do, it's far too easy to screw up and if you're alone you're pretty much SOL!

Cheers,

Hey Todd:

What were they hitting on below Blakeney??

I didn't have my fly rod along today at Appleton. Wish I had now, as there are a bunch of bass below the dam there. Lot of largies, but they would fall for a muddler or some such probably, poppers, etc.

Huge number of small pike. Couldn't believe it. Probably need some steelon or something. Hate using it. Have a hard time turning it over.

Next time the canoe is going and the fly gear.

Good fishin

Jigs,

I was switching flies often, no one constant fly that day. I like to start with an olive bhw bugger, an big ugly olive cone head wb with black hackle, mississippi mermaids, panfish poppers, clousers. With the fall turnover approaching I'll be moving toward minnow patterns.

As for your pike, try a 12" bite guard of 30lb Power Pro. That's what I was using this year. Had no problems with a 27" pike earlier this season. Personally I think the gill plates are resonsible for more breaks than the teeth. A 6-8" bite guard will protect from the teeth but it it rolls on you it's likely that the gill plates will slice your leader. One of the women that fished with us this spring had what we estimated was a 20lb muskie on....rolled on her and cut her off about 3' up her leader.

Thanks Todd.....................but:

30# PP is what I use on the bassin baitcaster. Regularly lose plastics to pike with that

I guess ya gotta be philosophical about it..........she's gone, she's gone

Thanks for the info. Gotta get me some Clousers. Have heard a lot of good things about them.

Regards:
