supreme compliment for fly tier

While at my favorite haunt on the Mississippi River at Appleton, I placed a humpie variation intended to mimick a dragon fly when a damsel fly decided to land about 6 inches away and just sit there "admiring" my creation. I says to self, "Well, this is it: the supreme test". Splash! a sunfish takes MY FLY!!

Mind you, that evening bass, sunfish, crappies were taking anything I threw at them but nevertheless, it felt good for my newbie efforts at fly making. After over 40 years of fly-fishing, I am finally taking fly tieing seriously.

BTW, I got a dandy 3-4# bass that evening and another one a few nights earlier. What an acrobatic show and good tugging! I just love fly fishing for bass. Unfortunately, the last one took my favorite fly with it. I'll have to bone up on my knots or perhaps use a stronger tippet.

Where do you go in Appleton? I've tried in the town there, mainly from the bridge to where it gets really shallow and never gotten anything over 1.5lbs.

flyfishing for bass is the king!:lol: need to give appleton a try its been on my to-fish list for way too long.
Getting fish on flies you make is rewarding and it also saves quite abit of money

Nothing gets the adrenalin pumping than to have a nice bass grab a fly you tied yourself.

I did up a few muddlers, and they looked nothing like the picture in the book . Guess the smallies didn't know that, and kept whacking them . Makes one feel sort of almost, I dunno, adequate........or lucky

There's a little number called a "jitterbee"(just Google jitterbee) which the panfish really seem to love. the sunfish really turn on to the yellow and black during the day. Then, come dusk, the crappies like the black and red........ .....darker

This goes on and on. Wish I had started fly fishing 45 years ago, and tying about the same time. Oh well, by the time I'm 90, betcha I'll be able even to tie some dry flies

I've tried walking the waters upstream from the dam but only got small fish, usually perch. Old timers tell me there used to be huge bass in amongst the rocks. I've also heard fly fishing around the golf club is OK too. Fished there once a few years ago. But I have always found fishing below the dam to be the best. Just keep on going over the bridge, turn left and just around the corner is a small park with a parking lot and very good boat launch, even a toilet. I go mostly in my float tube but getting through the weeds at this time of year is a bit of a drag (literally). I will probably start using my canoe from now till the end of the season. I have seen people catch from shore where the streams enter the "pond" and you can wade out a fair distance. I used to fish there before from shore about 8 years ago and did well. If I don't get 20 hits in a couple of hours flyfishing there, I am disappointed! Not telling where I park my tube or canoe. You'll have to catch me there!!
