Hello to everyone,

Just registered, but have enjoyed this site for awhile. I hope to make some new friends and learn from all of you.

I just picked up a Daiwa Accudepth 17 and am looking for suggestions for a suitable rod to go with it. I am looking for this set up to be an "all-purpose" trolling outfit. Something that I can set up to go for lakers, walleye, the odd muskie, etc

Any and all feedback is welcome.

Not an expert here but I have Daiwa Sealines (very similler to Acudepth) paired with Daiwa Heartland 8 1/2 ft downrigging rods.those rods are good value for the money($32)Shimano TDR is another good choice in the same price range. you don't need a sensitive rod for that purpose.if you plan to use it for dipsys and planner boards then a longer rod like 9 or 10 ftr is better.

I had looked at a 7' Shimano TDR the other day. I thought it would be a good match for what I am looking for. I don't use a downrigger or divers.

Please feel free to offer more suggestions.

Welcome to the site...

You will have difficulty matching up a rod that will suit you musky/walleye needs in one..... ....the reel will work fine but is a bit heavy for walleyes in this area......if you are venturing to Bay of Quinte and running planer boards the TDR and that reel will be fine.....trolling for walleyes in the Ottawa area would be fine with a spinning outfit which you probably already have....

The TDR will be fine for lakers......I'd beef it up a bit to run musky baits......a Shimano Compre has been suggested in the past and I'd concur with that selection.....the TDR will work....but it doesn't the backbone you'd need to run larger baits....

I guess it was just wishful thinking to get an outfit that will do "everything" .

I do use a variety of spinning combos (M, MH) for trolling at this point. I don't use planer boards, or other trolling gear. Just a man, a boat, some line, and a lure. Consider me old school, I guess.

I have seen the Compre suggested by a number of members. I will look into them. What other rods do you consider to be the most versatile? Further consideration has lead me to make this more of a walleye/laker outfit than anything. I don't do much muskie fishing (just wishful thinking) Besides, it's hard to explain to my wife why I spend so much on lures as it is, without throwing muskie baits into the mix.

If you eliminate muskies from the equation....it opens up a whole lot more options for you....

I'd say you'd be safe with a 6'6" to 7' medium action....lakers and walleyes in this area aren't a whole lot to handle...so lightening up your gear a bit will be a bit more fun.....

There are dozens of options at that point....pick a price range and go shoppin'!...

Thanks RJ! I appreciate your advice. I will be going with a 7' medium action rod. When I can, I'll get your advice on a muskie specific outfit. Just have figure out how to explain to my wife why I need another rod

2nd RJ has nailed it as usual A medium action rod for your trolling purposes will be sufficiant, and also can be used to cast with.The compre for the money is a great choice, doesnt hurt its tied with an IM8 graphite too.A little cheaper in the line, you can look into the "Clarus" line by Shimano aswell.Ive been toying with them as of late, and they seem to be a real decent rod for the price too!!!70 to 80$ range.

Hey welcome to the site. Like you I'm a newbe here too and have found more stuff on here than you can shake a rod tip at. I agree you may have a hard time matching up a balanced rod & Reel both for Muskie and Walleye I have a Shimano Graphite Beast Master one peice rod very hard to find $230.00 balanced up with a Ambassador 5500 Level wind bait casting reel $225.00 loaded with 17lbs spider wire, works fantastic. Total price new was almost $450.00 complete. That is the right balance for me. Quantium make some nice walleye rods ask around in the tackle shops . All round good little rod is the 7 foot Ugly Stick. I have caught both on this rod. as for a reel get one with a good drag your going to need it. Remember this tip...
You get what you pay for. The better the equipment the more likely your going to look after it... LOL.. It just lasts forever. Once again welcome and good fishing to you.

As mentioned a 7ft medium action rod should be fine for walleye and laker trolling. If you are going to use a super line I would up the length to 8 to 9ft so the rod takes the strike...the no stretch line has no give, so you need the rod to work like a shock absorber...this prevents the hooks from ripping out of the fish during a trolling strike.

I have been eyeing the Clarus, as it is a little cheaper than the Compre. Still haven't made up my mind yet.

Good advice about line stretch. I had intended to use 20/8 Fireline with a 12 or 15lb Flouro leader. I find I get bitten off by Pike if I run anything lighter. Does the Flouro not have enough stretch in it to help things out? With this set up, do you think I am better off with a 8' or 9' rod? I had hoped to get a 1 piece, but with that size a 2 piece is the way to go.

Secondly, does anyone know where in Ottawa I can pick up a copy of Precision Trolling. I want to get the most out of the Accudepth's line counter. Does anyone have expereince using these reels? Do you have any do's and dont's? This is will be my first year using it.
