Why are Vexilar's much more expensive then other fish finders?

Looking at the Canadian Tire website, The Vexilar FL8 is approx. $450.00 CND and the Piranha 2 Portable fishfinder just under the $200.00 mark.

Would other graphical fish finders do the the same (if not better) job then a few flashing coloured light bars???

Hey x-T, you might want to go to Vex's site to read how their flasher works, versus a regular fishfinder.
The flasher definitely has it's advantages, especially during hardwater season. It's more like real time, where you can watch as a fish sniffs out your lure/bait, and watching it hit it.
Now, whether it's worth the money, really depends on how much you'd like to spend...as there are non-flasher type fishfinders that are in the $500+ range.

Do some reading, and you'll can be the judge of whether it's worth the extra money, and whether it meets your needs.
I have the Lowrance X67c, which has both flasher mode and the other chart option. I have been using it both in hard and soft water, and can't say enough good things about it.

I have the Eagle Fish Easy 2. It is a great unit and mine is the portable. This makes it excelent for ice fishing. I take it everytime im out their on the ice and it always give me the extra edge vs the ppl without fish finders. On the other hand people with vex's always have a little better chance than me.

Allthough this unit is no flasher it can do almost the exact same thing. I set the sensitivity high, 80-100% and then zoom in 2-4x. I then set the speed at hyper speed to make it as close to real time as posible. This makes it just like any old vex for almost half the price. My unit was about $300 not including the battery. Not a bad deal for the price and it works great...

Anyways just my 2 cents.

A really neat feature the Vex has is the IR(Interference Rejection) settings.

You can tune out(7 levels) noise from other close by finders.

I can fish inside the same hut,with a buddy who's also using a Vex(5 ft away),and have no interference on the screen.

Anglers using lcr/lcd finders have no choice but to move out of range of the interference.

I imagine this is true but i was fishing in the same hut as my buddy and i had my unit on and he had his vex and i had no problems with my sonar.

another amazing feature on the vex is auto zoom and bottom lock for looking at the bottom six feet of the water column while fishing.also LP mode makes it easier to fish in super shallow water .

I just bought a vex two weeks ago. I always thought falshers were kind of useless until I watched guys fishing with the Vex and they explained how they work. The amazing thing is you can see the fish move off the bottom and take your bait. You can see your bait and move it to different schools of suspending fish at different depths until you can get one to bite. They are expensive but I am amazed at how well they work. I can hardly wait to hook it up to my boat when I go jigging for Walleye and Lake Trout!

We picked one up off e-bay for about half the price and just like everyone else I wouldn't want to be without it ever again. But good luck finding one this time of year. Would definitely recomend it for the ice fishing if you can afford it.
