Well so much for hard earned knowledge when it comes to catching lunker bass.....

Read on .... great story.

What Maggie Boyer thought was a lousy cast turned out to be her best.

Boyer, of Bracebridge, Ontario, was fishing out of a 14-foot canoe with her husband, Ed Hiltz, on a small lake near Haliburton on Oct. 7 when her miscast resulted in what could be the biggest largemouth bass ever caught in Ontario.

"It was a lousy cast," Boyer said. "I was farther out away from the weeds than I would have like to have been. I was probably over 20 feet of water. Then he went chomp. It wasn't more like a hit, it was suddenly I had this big weight on."

"He just kept staying down," Boyer added. "He took a little line and he'd go down again. We didn't even know what we had on. We thought it was a turtle or something."

It wasn't a turtle. After 30 minutes Boyer landed the fish of a lifetime - a largemouth bass that measured 24 inches long with a 22-inch girth. Catch and release calculators show a fish with these measurements weighs anywhere from 10 to 13 pounds, depending on the website and calculator used. The Ontario record largemouth bass is currently 10.43 pounds.

Boyer, however, did not meet the criteria for a catch-and-release record.

Oh yeah...

By the way Maggie...

That is one heck of a nice bass you caught there..... who cares what anyone says wether it is the new live release record or not... way to go!

Good fish!

That's a great fish- glad to see it was released.

In Ontario, there are no official catch-and-release records that I'm aware of.

I'm curious about- Boyer, however, did not meet the criteria for a catch-and-release record.

Any official Ontario record fish HAVE to be killed.

Awesome fish!!!

Just wanted to add that it's a shame that record fish have to be killed to be recognized. I know that if I ever am fortunate to catch a record muskie, it is going back unharmed.

What a beast! And I do mean the fish!!! I love the Haliburton area lakes, being from Toronto everyone hits the Kawartha's, I usually keep driving a little farther north, much less pressure in that area. Head lake right in the middle of town is great for bass....sssshhhh! (heard many people say it's fished out, haha) Best it coughed up for me was a 22" by 19" , just a story though, as I was alone and no camera!

How big was that muskie in your avatar, looks like a giant you got there. Is that a LOW muskie?

Very nice catch. I as well love the the Haliburton area for fishing. I ca see how that pig was caught around there. Lots of bait fish and not to much pressure.

You know what kills me is the look on her face.....

I know my wife gets a look like that every time the Visa bill arrives home after a trip to the Bass Pro Shop.

Thats what I was thinking. It looks VERY similar to the one that was in the "neighbour's fish" discussion.

That fish looks like a deep south hog. WOW!

She deserves to catch another one like that, just based on her releasing it! :D

phitty,

I think it is a conspericy not allowing us to find the tread. We should just let dead dogs lie.
