Rideau River Weekend Report

Fished the Rideau River Saturday and Sunday and the Bass were on. The big ones are starting to cruise a little and you could spot quite a few in the shallows. The best of the weekend was a bonus. My partner flipped under a dock, felt the tap, tap, set the hook and all hell broke loose as an 8 - 10 lb Muskie exploded from under the dock. Not huge by Muskie standards but when you are expecting a 2 - 3 lb Bass (hoping for a 4lb +) it is a nice bonus. I also saw something I have never seen. I caught about a 3.5 lb large mouth and there was a rusty 4/0 hook hanging out of it's butt. If you ever wondered what happens when a fish swallows a hook I guess they pass it (ouch)! I removed the hook (gently) and hopefully there is a much happier fish swimming out there!!!

Hey, that was my hook! ... I want it back.... uhm... on second thought, you can keep it.
I have to agree that the bass were hitting great on the weekend. In the shallows in the evening, the water looked like it was raining with so many minnows surfacing. A topwater popper in silver colour worked well for me. Most active bass were in the 1-3 pound range but I did manage a few 3+. No musky for me this weekend... could only troll for about 5 minutes before I'd say to myself... "I gotta cast my spinnerbait to that lily pad :D "

Have to agree. We were pulling in 2 and 3 lbers last night in the Kemptville area. Using a yellow bellied HP and black one. Then the big rain came through and the hitting quit.

Hey Nightroller

I was out on the Rideau on Sunday out of Kars and man they weren't biting at all. Senkos, spinners, crankbaits, surface lures...nothing. How in the world were you able to coax the bass to bite?

I read another post where someone said the fish need glasses and I have to say I missed quite a few on the scum frog due to bad aim on the fishes part. Most of my success came flipping weighted dingers, and senkos when I ran out of dingers, into heavy cover (what little is left). Black and blue was really hot on both days! If you like using plastic frogs, I found a really slow retrieve worked best. The Muskie was caught on a green or pumpkin dinger with a chartreus tail.
